A must have item for rock and country affecionados Frank has played with the best known artists in both genres. His Jesus loves this mandoline player track,of which he has done over 100 versions, showcases Frank's speed and accuracy and truely show off his skills as one of the greatest mandolin players of our day. New Riders of the Purple Sage fans will enjoy Frank's version of Ashes of Love and Panama Red. He covers just about all the bases and has some of country's best musicians playing along with him. The Good Old Boys never sounded better.

Frank Wakefield took his hero Bill Monroe's mandolin style and learned it note for note, riff for riff, nuance for nuance. It has been said and has been written Wakefield could correct and remind Big Mon on passages of the Father Of Bluegrass' own playing which had been forgotten in all his years touring with the Bluegrass Boys.

Monroe adored Frank Wakefield as a picker and as a human being. Wakefield says everything in opposites, saying you are unattractive when he means you are attractive and so forth and can even scramble sentences like Professor Irwin Corey or Stanley Unwin but make no mistake the man is one helluva bright spark. As a writer (New Camptown Races is justly his signature song) and as a musician Frank Wakefield is the Real Deal. He took bluegrass outta Dixie and into the San Francisco Bay Area's rock scene with CDs this as this one. His use of Grateful Dead members and New Riders of The Purple Sage members in his band, along with bluegrass legends such as Don Reno on banjo and Chubby Wise on fiddle, bridge a gap most people thought was absolutely unbridgeable.

Frank Wakefield and the Good Old Boys were arguably Frank's artistic highpoint and anytime you see that monicker the product is worth investigating. Wakefield is not in great health these days and so his gigs are more poignant than ever. And I thank him for all the licks he has personally shown me at Bill Monroe Style Mandolin Camp in Owensboro, Kentucky (held every first week of September by the International Bluegrass Music Museum there) and I sincerely hope he keeps picking and making music as high lonesome, high falutin' and of the high artistic standards heard here. He is a one-off and for al lhis early Monroe imitations he has long since proven there is no one like him.

Check this one out. You will not be disappointed. And get ready to be inspired.
