5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for review of material
I am studying "Frankenstein" in a college Eng 1B class and our final paper is based on the book worth 30% of our grade. The importance of the material makes me want to reread the book but as I'm in a time crunch I cannot. I ordered this book and it has all the characters, no absences of scenes or absent plot points so this is great for the analytical approach I'm taking...

3.0 out of 5 stars From an English teacher
As an English teacher, I'm always looking for means to show my students different ways to look at literature. My main intent to order this one was because it maintained the original text...which it does. Other than that it doesn't do much special. I've found some other graphic novel for other works that made some bold statements with THE IMAGES; this one doesn't...the...

I am studying "Frankenstein" in a college Eng 1B class and our final paper is based on the book worth 30% of our grade. The importance of the material makes me want to reread the book but as I'm in a time crunch I cannot. I ordered this book and it has all the characters, no absences of scenes or absent plot points so this is great for the analytical approach I'm taking. We have to explicate the paper and I can use this book to pinpoint the pages in the book and find the quotes I will use. Plus this book has some extra small essays in the back that are of use in my thesis and outline. I would say this book also has the best artwork and translation of the three I bought from Amazon. This is a valuable addition to my studies and I recommend it to any person that needs a condensed version of the story. You can just look through the pages quickly and find the section from the pictures instead of reading anything. A great read for serious critical thinkers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to this classic!, August 4, 2011
In a way, it seems somewhat pretentious to create a graphic novel based on so revered a classic as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Thankfully, this book does credit to the original, condensing the novel down, and yet bringing it to life with well-drawn characters. Thankfully, the creators of this book resisted the temptation to "spice up" the original, and stayed true to the story.

I found it to be an entertaining read. The story was condensed, and yet readable. I found the illustration work to be very good, being realistic and not cartoonish, with the sepia-like quality enhancing both the feeling of the story being long-ago and the feeling of horror and despair. Yeah, it's a very good graphic novel, and a very good introduction to this classic!

As an English teacher, I'm always looking for means to show my students different ways to look at literature. My main intent to order this one was because it maintained the original text...which it does. Other than that it doesn't do much special. I've found some other graphic novel for other works that made some bold statements with THE IMAGES; this one doesn't...the graphics are pretty straight forward and concretely consistent. The most unique thing I can show with this one is how it pares down an entire chapter to one spread in the book. The artwork is nice, but doesn't leap off the page; and when it does leap of the page, it is a bit comical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done! 4 1/2 stars!, November 23, 2011
I have never read Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein". I have seen several Frankenstein movies. This graphic novel is as good, if not better than the best film version that I've seen("Mary Shelley's Frankenstein").

I have been interested in classic literature and graphic novels since I was a teen. So, when I saw that a company named Classical Comics was making literary classics into graphic novels, I was ecstatic! I own several graphic novel adaptations of classic works of literature. Not all of them are from Classical Comics; some of them are from Marvel. But "Frankenstein" is the first one I purchased from Classical Comics. And I wasn't disappointed.

This book has everything you could want in a graphic novel. It has excellent writing(much of which is taken directly from the original prose novel, which makes you feel like you're reading the original work, adding to the older gothic feel of the story instead of coming off as some modern reimagining). The artwork is top-notch, capturing the mood of the story brilliantly. And the story itself is both very entertaining and full of themes that force you to think about the human condition. The idea and feeling of acceptance is one of the themes that is most powerful, in my opinion.

All in all, if you are a fan of classic literature, gothic horror, graphic novels, or all three - you should check this one out. And check out the other classic literature graphic novel adaptations that are out there. There are some really great reads. Classical Comics' "A Christmas Carol" is excellent. And Marvel has a line of classic works, such as the "Oz" series of books by L. Frank Baum, and "Pride and Prejudice" just to name a few. Also I have to add here that Marvel also has an adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" that has to be the best graphic novel adaptation of that story ever done. It's the only adaptation I've ever read, but I've read the original prose novel and Marvel's version is so faithful to it that I am skeptical that any other graphic novel could do a better job. Although, Classical Comics is releasing their version of "Dracula" in Februrary of 2012. So I will definitely be getting that, and may then have to eat my words. We'll see.

This is a great introduction to classic literature. Do yourself a favor and buy it. It's money well spent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Graphic Novel, October 28, 2010
This book is a wonderful representation of Mary Shelley's original novel, in graphic form and I found the story to be just as engaging as the original. It has been a long time since I read the original, so I can't speak to how true to the novel it was. For those who don't know, the story of Frankenstein is a story about a scientist, who sets out to create life. His success takes the form of a gruesome monster, who when rejected by society becomes violent, and begins to torment his creator. I recommend both the Graphic Novel and the original as good reads!

2.0 out of 5 stars Product Came Damaged, June 25, 2009
The shipper seemed to carelessly package the book without nearly adequate protection, and the result was that the book came damaged. It was a gift to someone so I didn't have time to send it back to get replaced. Plus, it is a real hassle and a cost to have to send things back. I wonder why I paid so much for S&H fees, when the postage and packaging was so cheaply done. I would not use that shipper again.
