Being a collector of soundtracks, I took a chance with this one because I am unfamiliar with the composers. I mainly got it because I am a fan of sci-fi/adventure/horror soundtracks and this movie looked like it would fit that bill. I never even saw the movie trailer until today and the only reason I did that is because the soundtrack is so awesome...I just had to see what the trailer looked like. The movie does look pretty cool too. Well, the soundtrack arrived in the mail today and I've been listening to it and I was surprised to see that Lisa Gerrard is involved with the music as well. You can hear her haunting voice in the opening track and there are other choir pieces scattered throughout the music as well. The choir sections are my favorites because they really add to the score and provide a "gothic" feel to the music. These are the pieces that give the score the emotional backdrop for the movie and the composers have put these together nicely. When you watch the movie trailer, you can see that this movie is probably full of action scenes and there is plenty of that music in this score as well. I didn't find it boring, like some action music can be, it was actually fun to listen to. There are plenty of slower pieces as well such as "All I see is Darkness" which is really cool. One thing I noticed while listening to the CD is that the composers use a variety of music techniques to bring this score to life. You have your big orchestra sound with strings/brass, you have your choir/vocals, and you also have some electronic music added into the mix. You can sometimes hear something like a John Carpenter "Escape from New York" electric bass thing going on in the background too. It is a great soundtrack and I am glad I got it. I noticed that my CD had a sticker on it that said only 1000 of these were made...so if you like to collect physical CDs...you better get this quick. Looks to be a fun movie and I recommend the soundtrack highly.

I, Frankenstein is a new fantasy/action film based on the graphic novel of the same name, where the Creature created by Victor Frankenstein lives through the centuries, trying to fit into a world he's unwelcome in, when he is suddenly thrown head-first into a war between gargoyles and demons that could extinguish the human race.

The film itself was fun and entertaining, but very disappointing due to a poor script. But, one great thing that came from the film is the musical score from Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil, who also had worked on the acclaimed musical score for the epic, Cloud Atlas. With "I, Frankenstein," Klimek and Heil build darker, more haunting themes mixed with intense action cues to build the atmosphere of the film. In the second track, the action builds with intense violas and haunting vocals. My favorite track on the disc, though, is "Ride of the Gargoyles," with vocals from Lisa Gerrard (Gladiator), in a track that starts off somber but transitions into a beautifully epic action track. Honestly, it's one of the best battle-sounding tracks i have ever listened to.

If you liked Cloud Atlas, Gladiator or other big blockbuster scores, get this. I highly recommend the CD version; an excellent collector's item as it is limited to 1000 units.

Since one of the things I especially liked about the film was its soundtrack, I just had to buy it. I'm glad I did. I'm a sucker for grandiose scores, soaring in nature, with a fine chorale treatment throughout. It conjures up great visual imagery. In this case, there's something magnificently relentless about its pounding beat, fraught with anxious portent, propelling the score along to its inevitable conclusion. I love listening to music like this when I'm writing or painting. It's very inspiring, very evocative.
