Editorial Reviews

Review

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is one of the masterpieces of nineteenth-century Gothicism. While stay-ing in the Swiss Alps in 1816 with her lover Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and others, Mary, then eighteen, began to concoct the story of Dr. Victor Frankenstein and the monster he brings to life by electricity. Written in a time of great personal tragedy, it is a subversive and morbid story warning against the dehumanization of art and the corrupting influence of science. Packed with allusions and literary references, it is also one of the best thrillers ever written. Frankenstein; Or, the Modern Prometheus was an instant bestseller on publication in 1818. The prototype of the science fiction novel, it has spawned countless imitations and adaptations but retains its original power.
This Modern Library edition includes a new Introduction by Wendy Steiner, the chair of the English department at the University of Pennsylvania and author of The Scandal of Pleasure.

Mary Shelley was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin in 1797 in London. She eloped to France with Shelley, whom she married in 1816. After Frankenstein, she wrote several novels, including Valperga and Falkner, and edited editions of the poetry of Shelley, who had died in 1822. Mary Shelley died in London in 1851.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginning/Intermediate ESL Readers, June 11, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Frankenstein (Step-Up Classic Chillers) (Paperback)
I generally don't like adapted books for my ESL students but Frankenstein works well for my level 2 ESL students (2 out of 6 levels). The writing is not forced nor does it use a restricted vocabulary like so many adapted books for ESL students. Indeed, I find that this version of Frankenstein is very interestingly written. Larry Weinberg is a good writer in his own right. It's a great book to read aloud. In fact, I have read this book aloud on video and posted the reading on youtube for the students to access whenever they want. Also, the fact that Frankenstein was originally written for adults makes it totally acceptable to adult ESL readers. Furthermore, many of my adult students have read Frankenstein in their own language and they are delighted to read a version in English that they can understand and work with. I strongly recommend this book in lower level ESL classes. Your students will love it. I use Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Time Machine, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Phantom of the Opera in my ESL classes, as well. Check out all of these and other classics by Random House.

5.0 out of 5 stars Students READ, December 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Frankenstein (Step-Up Classic Chillers) (Paperback)
My student are non/low readers who loved to be "scared".Frankenstein (Step-Up Classic Chillers) was a book that kept my 2-4 graders interested. They asked to read the pages and were proud of themselves when they were not only be able to read a page,a chapter but they were SUPER proud of themselves when the finished the book! The story, of course, was "watered down" and just gave the basics of the story. I was personally disappointed that the story was not very discriptived in the scences or character building. Taking this all into consideration, I still recommend Frankenstein (Step-Up Classic Chillers) to anyone who wants to read a classic with students or children who are low readers.

I bought this book for my ten year old son who was interested in reading the classics. I also bought him Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the Phantom of the Opera from the "Step-up Classic Chillers" series. All were great and kept his interest.
