Book Description

1551113082 978-1551113081 September 15, 1999 2
Mary Shelley's deceptively simple story of Victor Frankenstein and the creature he brings to life, first published in 1818, is now more widely read and more widely discussed by scholars than any other work of the Romantic period. From the creature's creation to his wild lament over the dead body of his creator in the Arctic wastes, the story retains its narrative hold on the reader even as it spins off ideas in rich profusion. Macdonald and Scherf's edition of Frankenstein has been widely acclaimed as an outstanding edition of the novel for the general reader and the student as much as for the scholar. The editors use as their copy-text the original 1818 version, and detail in an appendix all of Shelley's later revisions. They also include a range of contemporary documents that shed light on the historical context from which this unique masterpiece emerged. Macdonald and Scherf have now revised and updated their introduction, notes and bibliography, and have added new documents (including a review of Frankenstein by Percy Shelley).

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is the best, the most thoughtful advanced school edition of Frankenstein ever done. The text is well-edited, the introduction is thorough, and the collection of contextual documents could hardly be improved." (Jerome McGann )

"Superb. The introduction and appendices are particularly valuable...accessible and illuminating." (Bernard Hirsch )

"Far better than any [other edition] on the market today." (Craig Keating ) --Craig Keating

From the Publisher

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a review of the book! But please read!, September 19, 2011

This review is from: Frankenstein: the original 1818 text (Broadview Literary Texts) (Paperback)
Amazon has included reviews of many editions of Frankenstein under one listing. That is to say, if you look at the reviews for any edition of Frankenstein the same 500+ reviews will come up. Before buying or commenting on these reviews check to see which edition you are reading reviews of or want to purchase. I'm a a fan of Amazon but for a bookseller to do this is irresponsible.

For those of you who want to know, the Broadview Literary Text edition of the original 1818 text is the standard scholarly edition as of the writing of this "review". It is packed with extra information and allows the reader a much broader picture of the work.

I chose a one-star review to get attention only. I am trying to save money and prevent hassle and misunderstanding. The Broadview Literary Text edition deserves five. What Mary Shelley deserves is another story...

4.0 out of 5 stars Read for class, first time read, April 18, 2011

This review is from: Frankenstein: the original 1818 text (Broadview Literary Texts) (Paperback)
I read this for the first time for class. The extra stuff in the beginning allows you understand the context more and better analyze the text, (if that's what you're looking for). Otherwise its still a great book overall.
