Wholesome but never boring,

This 10-track compilation of Frankie Avalon's late '50s and early '60s hits is a great bargain you shouldn't pass up. The music is always fun and upbeat, and like Frankie, it has stood the time very well. "Just Ask Your Heart," my personal favorite, has an unmistakable Rick Nelson influence. Avalon handles a variety of styles well, so listeners of any age can enjoy this.

I bought this to do a compilation disc for a reunion and there were about 4 songs that were actual hits by Frankie back in the day. These seem to be from the original tapes and they are clean with good sound reproductions. There are a couple of songs that are pretty bad but that goes with the territory.

Frankie Avalon could make the girls swoon--and they still talk about him today. This budget priced CD gives us ten tracks. I would ordinarily complain because of the lacking of more songs but because the price is so low (as I write this) I guess it's a fair trade in this case.
The album starts off with Frankie performing his smash hit "Venus;" Frankie sings this passionately with all his heart and soul. The female backup chorus sounds great and I like the way the musical arrangement uses the guitar. Great! "Why" is another beautiful ballad by Frankie; he sings this to perfection and the melody is incredibly catchy. The guitars, percussion and more make the musical arrangement on "Why" really special. Listen also for "Dede Dinah;" this number sports an early rock and rock flavor with Frankie singing in what is just about his best falsetto. The brass adds to the melody and Frankie never sings a superfluous note on "Dede Dinah." "Bobby Sox To Stockings" is an adorable number that features Frankie's vocals squarely in the spotlight and this number always was one of Frankie's more romantic, passionate love ballads. Frankie's excellent diction bolsters his performance as well. "A Boy Without A Girl" gets the royal treatment from Frankie as he sings this slowly with all his heart; and I like that backup chorus! "I'll Wait For You" also showcases Frankie's strong voice as he bats this straight out of the ballpark. The album ends with "You Are Mine." Frankie sounds great and this ballad features great use of the strings to bolster Frankie's singing. "You Are Mine" makes a terrific ending for this album! Ordinarily, as I stated above, I would complain about an album that contains only ten tracks. However, in this case the album (as of the time of this writing) costs $5.98 so I suppose that's a fair trade. The artwork is good, too. This album is great for the casual fan who wants just a few of the best by Frankie Avalon. Diehard fans will already have these numbers in their collections. Thank you, Frankie!
