5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Tool!
I recently purchased the Franklin Covey Style Guide as one of the text books for a class I was taking. I had never heard of this book and I can't figure out why! Anyone that EVER writes any business communications or does presentations should have a copy of the Style Guide on their desk! 1.0 out of 5 stars Covey's CD doesn't work, neither does customer service!
I recently purchased the Covey Style Guide with CD Rom. The CD rom, after installation, wouldn't come up. I phoned Covey's 800 number and got bounced around to several people who said I had to go online for help, or else give my credit card up front for a minimum of $20 service charge. Their online system supposedly has a technician online, but I kept getting the message...

I recently purchased the Franklin Covey Style Guide as one of the text books for a class I was taking. I had never heard of this book and I can't figure out why! Anyone that EVER writes any business communications or does presentations should have a copy of the Style Guide on their desk! This book has it all...sample documents and letters, examples of graphics, you name it. I am so excited about this book that I couldn't wait to tell my peers at work about it. You can bet there will always be a copy on my desk. As a member of Toastmasters I know that effective speeches have to be well written before they can be delivered. This book has great tips for writing effectivly...whether it is a technical document, a memo, or a speech. If you want people to start noticing your documents, buy this guide. It can improve your writing skills so that you are ready for that promotion, and the section on resumes can help you get the job! The guide is easy to use, organized in alphabetical order, and includes lots of examples. The thing I like the best is that each section has a summary on the first page, highlighting the key points of the section. I also appreacite the bias-free language. If you do any writing at all, you can't afford NOT to buy this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great desktop reference for Technical Writers, November 30, 2000

This is a great reference tool for anyone starting out in the technical communications field! This book is very user friendly. It's apparent once you start flipping through the pages. All the topics, such as, "Editing and Proofreading," "Page Layout," and "Word Problems," are organized in alphabetical order and printed on the outside edge of the page's header in large easy-to-read font. I also appreciate the way each topic has the keypoints summarized at the beginning with numbers that corresponds to an in-depth discussion of the keypoints. The enclosed CD-ROM was also a great addition to this book. This book is a worthwhile investment!

This book tells you how to do everything! It can be used by both students and professionals. This book has everything from how to properly use a comma to writing bibliographies; from how to use photographs in presentations and documents to writing resumes. This guide gives you hints on how to manage meetings effectively. I use this book at both work and home. People come to me to borrow this fantasic book constantly. I have the CD installed on my computer and love using the program - it is very user-friendly. I don't think any student or office should be without this wonderful tool.

There are a number of useful style guides for technical and business writers on the market; this is my favorite!
It is easy to understand, has great examples, covers all imaginable aspects of written communication, and - the best - it comes with exhaustive coverage on a CD.
Finally, it is definitely the best bank for your buck!

I got this on the recommendation of other professional writers at a training seminar. I use AP style in my job but it doesn't always fit since we're not writing news items for the wire. A big selling point is that it comes with a CD with most of the content so you can install it on your computer and search digitially.

However, I have been somewhat disappointed in that the few things I have looked up did not give definitive rules, but more like "Here are the options you can choose, just be consistent." I realize sometimes there are no hard and fast rules, but I'm used to AP, which takes a stand, and even though I don't agree with many AP rules, having a definitive guide saves me time and effort.

However, the content of the Franklin Covey book is extensive, and there are many items of value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible style guide with CDROM, May 7, 2007

I'm an instructor / developer with a large midwest insurance company. In that role, I teach writing skills to our employees. While I have many other style guides, this book by FranklinCovey is a delightful surprise. It has 440 magazine quality pages with vivid color illustrations, side bars, explanations, definitions, descriptions, and examples. If you're looking for a comprehensive style guide that you'll be happy with on your first purchase, make this book your first choice.

I am an instructor of Grammar and Business Writing Seminars, and this is a top-selling book because it has pictures; is in alphabetical order; includes editing and design tips; and can be loaded onto your computer.

This is NOT the book you want for technical writing; let me recommend the Gregg Reference ManualThe Gregg Reference Manual 10e. The disc is also not Windows 7 compatable yet.
