Gr 5-8--Two well-organized biographies with enough detail to satisfy report writers. While these plain-looking volumes with a few black-and-white photographs are unlikely to attract browsers, they provide solid, chronological profiles of two famous individuals. Considering the vast size of the Disney empire today, children may find it difficult to imagine that it all began as one man's dream to create animated cartoons. Cole begins with anecdotes from his subject's childhood and family life and continues with an account of Disney's entrance into the movie business with his brother Roy in 1923 and his later enterprises. The final chapter offers a brief look at Walt Disney Productions' achievements in the years since Disney's death. The coverage of Roosevelt's life follows a similar format, and begins with the man's privileged childhood in Hyde Park. The influence of his family, and his domineering mother in particular, is noted. When describing Roosevelt's presidency, Schuman provides good background information about the economy and social climate, as well as the political situations in other countries. The final chapter looks at what succeeding presidents have done with the government programs Roosevelt enacted. Russell Freedman's Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Clarion, 1990) has set the standard with its appealing format, large photos, and drawings, but this is a good additional purchase and provides details not found in Freedman's book.
