Great But Only For The True Whitman Fan,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Franklin Evans, or The Inebriate: A Tale of the Times (Kindle Edition)
Franklin Evans is the only novel written by Great American Poet Walt Whitman and it shows. The novel is well written but it is definitely of the time. Someone who doesn't usually read novels of this time period will find it hard to get through. Also the book is pretty racist towards Native Americans. It is pretty tame for when it was written but it is probably too much for modern sensibilities. This book is about the dangers of inebriation in all of its forms. Whitman stated that he wrote the book for money to capitalize on the burgeoning temperance movement and didn't care for the results. The novel is fine and interesting early work of a great writer. It is a bit pricey for an impulse buy but if you love Whitman it is a must have. The books also contains good bonus material for the academically interested.
