5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend for young children facing a hospital visit

3.0 out of 5 stars Only okay for a tonsillectomy
I bought this book for my nearly 3 year old daughter to help prep for her tonsillectomy. It was only okay, nothing wrong with it, but nothing that outstanding either. Maybe more for boys? It's also a hospital visit for a general injury. I found the other books (hospital visit sticker book and Goodbye Tonsils) more relevant for my daughter. We barely used this, would...

His only disppointment was not seeing Dr. Bear at his hospital.

5.0 out of 5 stars The absolute best of its kind!, May 26, 2005

Tressy N. Collier "Children's Librarian" (Blackstone Public Library, Blackstone, MA) - See all my reviews

As a children's librarian, this is the best book I've found so far for children that explains what a trip to the hospital is like. In the story, Franklin accidentally gets a crack in his shell while playing soccer, and must have a simple operation to fix it. Franklin is nervous, and tries to be brave, but inside, he's a little frightened. Everything is explained, in detail, from the hospital bracelet with your name on it, how an X-Ray machine works, even the numbing medicine put on Franklin's hand so he doesn't feel the needle for the anesthetic. It also explains that while your parents cannot be in the operating room with you, they will be right there when you wake up! As with all the Franklin books, the illustrations are beautiful, and this book is no exception. All of the details are there, right down to the rails on the hospital bed and the IV stand. I highly reccommend this book to any child who's nervous about a stay in the hospital, or simply to anyone who's curious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, January 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Franklin Goes To The Hospital (Paperback)
This book was great for preparing my daughter for an upcoming surgery. It went through the basics of what she would experience, even if the reason for the surgery was different, and it was done with a character she was already familiar with. The day of her surgery she was telling me what would happen next.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Ok, January 24, 2002

This shows that it's ok to be scared at the hospital. Franklin got hit in the chest at a soccer game. He ends up having to go to the hospital. He thinks that when you take a x-ray. Everyone will see how scare you are inside. Franklin didn't want everyone to know how scared he was. This a good book for any child that has to go to the hospital. I t shows you don't have to be scared. The doctors and nurses are there to help you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Franklin Learns About the Hospital, and Bravery, January 12, 2006

Kids love Franklin the turtle and so if they have to go the hospital, this book will really help.

Franklin's shell hurts when he's trying off after having a bath. He learns he'll have to have an operation. He shows his friends a book he got all about the hospital and all his friends think that he's very brave. But he worries that he might not be as brave as everyone thinks.

I think it's neat that this book teaches on two fronts --- both technical stuff about the hospital and also about courage and feelings.

Note that while this book has the names Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark on the cover, an examination of the title page reveals that it is actually written by Sharon Jennings (who has also done many of the TV storybooks) with illustrations by Shelley Southern. It's still a neat book though.

This book was a great help to prepare my 4 year old daughter for surgery. Once she was at the hospital, everything was known and already seen in the book and she had fun.. I highly recommend it to relieve the anxiety before a surgery

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing book to prepare for a hospital stay!, May 28, 2010

This review is from: Franklin Goes To The Hospital (Paperback)
This is honestly the best book to prepare your child for a hospital stay/surgery. i am a pediatric nurse at a hospital and a mother. my 2 1/2 yr old recently had to have surgery and an overnight stay at a hospital. i bought a few books to prepare him and after reading the others we completely abandoned them for this one. my son has never seen Franklin before so i can't even use the excuse that he is a "fan" of franklin. this book goes into great detail about what to expect. it is very sweet in that it explains that being a brave patient doesn't mean you aren't scared. my son was so well prepared for his hospital stay that he truly handled it very well. the nurses, surgeon and anesthesiologist even told me that when he got into the OR he was asking questions about the machines. we still read this book because he likes it so much. the only thing i found odd was that it explained that franklin's parents went home at night. i'm not sure how other hospitals work but where i work and where he had surgery both hospitals allow parents to spend the night. but i just explained that i would be with him the entire time and that daddy would be there during the day. i could not give higher reviews for this book. it is by far a very well written book and i plan on recommending this to anyone preparing their child for a hospital stay.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice for 3 year olds too, January 27, 2007
This review is from: Franklin Goes To The Hospital (Paperback)
My son was going in for same day surgery, and this was a nice way to reiterate what we had already seen on our tour. The end part where the turtle is LEFT by his parents overnight probably can be omitted, but so can so many other things in books these days. Overall, a nice and non offending book, even for a family who doesn't normally use characters such as these in their normal book libary.
