The EST-7014 includes over 2,000 useful phrases broken into 14 categories of "Everyday Phrases" and 13 categories of "Travel Phrases" so you can quickly find exactly what you are looking for. Another amazing feature of the EST-7014 is the Visual Dictionary with more than 18,000 entries. This 5-language (English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish) reference source is an invaluable tool for exploring another language. Broken into 17 categories and then hundreds of sub-categories, you can easily search the database in categories such as; Animal Kingdom, Food and Kitchen, Human Being, Sports and Games, and many more. When you reach the desired entry, simply press the number or letter button on the keyboard that corresponds with the area of the picture you wish to see translated. Pressing "3" on the keyboard brought up the "Core" of the sun on the illustration to the near left. Pressing "b" on the keyboard with the cyclist entry selected will return "Fork" and its corresponding translation. Then, if you wish to hear the translation spoken, simply press the corresponding speaker key on the keyboard for each language.

I have played around with this translator for a couple of weeks now and am very impressed. The translations seem very good and it is easy to switch languages. I have varying degrees of familiarity with Japanese, Spanish, Italian and Dutch and all worked out well.
The Japanese is really good. It may not be any use to a person who does not read Japanese, but it would be useless as a Japanese translator if it showed everything in the Roman alphabet. In Japanese and Chinese, you cannot necessarily tell how to pronounce something from the written text, so the vocalizations are vital. This does not substitute for a dedicated Japanese-English dictionary, though. There is no way to search kanji.

It takes a 2gb micro SD card and I could listen to music in the background while I worked away. There is an agenda, a clock with two time zones, a calculator, calendar and memo feature. The box comes with a bunch of adapters for different countries. The colour screen is great. The Franklin web site is so poor, you would not know about many of these features.

There were two features that were less useful. One is the "travel" section which has an alphabetical list of restaurants and some sights for a few major cities. There are no reviews or descriptions. The other limitation is the photo feature. I had photos on my SD card, but they came out distorted on the screen. I think that if you had the right size, it might look OK, but I did not find any instructions on how to convert.

A previous review suggested that there may be better products out there. If that is the case, I do not know about them. My first electronic dictionary was by Etaco and the translations were a joke. I have two previous Frnaklin Spanish-English dictionaries and I have found them to be pretty good. I also have a Casio for English-Japanese. There is no translator that can take a random sentence and produce a credible translation in another language.

This Franklin EST-7014 is a terrific aid while on vacation or traveling overseas. I'm retired military, and I jump'd on a USAF Space "A" flight to Ramstein, Germany using this 14-language talking translator on numerous occasions in talking and non-talking mode. Went to a train station booth asking the ticket agent if she spoke english, she snub'd her nose, shaking her head "no" and went back to doing her cross-word puzzle...when I pushed the button on the Franklin transx and it asked the question "when is the next train to (I added: Manheim)" she laughed and started helping me with better english than I speak.

When I'm learning a foreign language I use this translator with ear-phones so nobody else knows what I'm doing. This EST-7014 helped me with all kinds of functions; in addition, it has calculator, auto-country time/date, trip elapse time/stop watch (flight/train), exchange-rate currency converter, and automatic button to switch my favorite phrases from one language to another... it's a blast to use, especially in Europe and SE Asia where I visit multiple countries within a couple weeks.

Also, the recharging plug-in attachments that comes with it work great for that 220 European/Asian voltage...this Franklin is more than worth the money for me.

It came in good time and worked great at home, that being said, I wanted it for travel to foreign countries. Well guess what,
Only works when Internet connected. :-(
That is a major problem when traveling and makes it useless .

Franklin has made decent enough translators for years and this one is average enough, however you would think with the ability of everything from phones to tv's to connect to net and learn and grow that Franklin would start incorporating this into their machines to make them more than a basic translator.

The translations work well and you can switch languages. The translator has a clock, a calculator, calendar and memo feature.

For just a pure translator there is nothing else better out there, however, with the ability that phones now have with apps, for this price, you should get more for your money.

I like the Franlin 14 Language Translator.
You recommended to purchase a 220 Volt converter, when going to Europe, plus
extra plugs.
It turns out, all this comes with the translater.
Please tell your next Customer, that he does not need to buy a coverter and
a World Wide Travel Charger Adapter. I was tricked into buying theese items.
I do not need them and I would like to return them.

The color screen is a great idea, but the tool is way too cumbersome to be really useful, I did buy a 14 language "translator" for somebody else and thought it was ok, but if you are trying to learn Spanish the BES-2100 is by far the way to go, it has verb conjugations and far more words, I have caried one of those in my pocket for over a year now learning Spanish. I just wanted to try German yet too... But for some reason the audio is very distorted with headphones, the enter button is not in the corner, it takes too long to turn on, and costs a lot. I think the term "translator" is a misnomer, it is a dictionary, you type in a word and it gives a definition and uses sometimes, you CANNOT translate sentences or phrases besides what is already in it. I seriously wish I had bought the cheaper one and saved the money... but how can you know ahead of time?
