Franklin OEC-570 Compact Oxford English Dictionary with Thesaurus and Spell Correction

I bought five of these electronic dictionaries for my five homeschooled children. Some words we tried to look up weren't in this dictionary. My highschool son just looked up a word today "cachinnate" and it wasn't in there. He had to go to the hardcopy dictionary. I purchased Franklin SCD-1890 for myself. I can't remember it not having any words we needed. We have had both of these dictionaries in our home for at least 4-5 years. I don't like that the Franklin MWD-1490 takes a large watch-type battery. The SCD-1890 takes AAA batteries, which we are more likely to have on hand at home. I currently have four high-school kids now and I find the MWD-1490 inadequate for their needs. It is still a good tool for my 6th grader.
For the cost and constant use the $50 plus spent on it was worthwhile. On the plus side the letters are large and legible. I like the ability to store up to 40 words and recall them later for practice. Very compact, fits in a shirt pocket.
On the down side, you really have to press down on the keys even having to press the first letter of a word twice before it would respond. For this reason I subtracted one star.

My wife is going to a community college. She is not a native english speaker and this electronic dictionary is a huge help for her to quickly check on the meaning of words so she can understand a lecture or find synonyms and antonyms. We are not exactly poor and sure as heck not rich but for [...] bucks the features and number of words available on this machine are awesome.

I purchased this for my teenage son as a replacement for a similar but much older Franklin Compact Dictionary that finally gave up the ghost (after nearly 15 years!). It has been a godsend for him as he uses it in school on a daily basis as well as at home when he's reading and doing homework. He really struggles with words and consequently had been falling behind at school because of it. Since he's had this, he has begun to depend much less on others and is excelling where he would get stuck before.

English is not my first language. I purchased this Digital Compact Dictionary, as I have enrolled in a Degree program. When I started to use, I felt it's useless. Main reason why I rate this in useless rating is ,it's not worth for the money you spend. This dictionary doesn't have words you need. It will show you all the words that any 5th grader knows. For example, you don't find following words in this dictionary (These are some examples) Demurrage, infliction, and restate. Therefore I suggest this is good for a 3rd grader not for a graduate student....!

This item was purchased to replace a very old version of this Crossword Dictionary. It cannot come close to the older model. It has a very limited list of names, places and other proper nouns. In the case of this item, newer is NOT better.

I ordered this as a Christmas present for my grandson, but ended up in giving it to him earlier and he just loves it. I know that he will enjoy using it and it will be convenient to carry around when needed. He already had another electronic dictionary, but this one seems to include everything that he needs for now. He tried it this morning and has really enjoyed it. It arrived in good condition and the delivery was very prompt. Thanks so much.

Love it; however, I think the instructions for applications other than the dictionary are complicated. I read a lot and have a good vocabulary, but every novel seems to throw in some unfamiliar words. This product does exactly what I expected -- gives me the definition.

Dictionary was given as a gift and recipient loved its features. Delivery was speedy and price very good.

Bought it thru AMAZON a few weeks before my son's school started... made sure it worked and put it in at hard plastic box.. removed it just prior to taking it o his school/teacher and screen was cracked?/LCD was darkened... Amazon seller told me call seller (see Piss Off)... That it worked when I got it so call Frnkln because they were not going to help me... Frnkln said sorry but there is no way that could be our problem(again see Piss Off), but offered me 30% off on another 1... no thnx... good thing I don't live in some mud hole & understand that most modern return policies at ACTAUL BRICK AND MORTER stores are more a function of customer service & a bid for return business than some draconian adherence to 19oo's freight laws.. outside of books, MP3... used items I can find NOWHERE else (& I will look hard) Will NEVER buy new item through AMAZON again!
