Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Sandra Hill is an author to watch. Her innovative romances are some of the hottest and sassiest on the market. And her hilariously funny time-travel romances are cutting edge; they're always just a little too racy, raunchy, wild, and funny. If you haven't read Gone with the Wind or seen the movie, you will still laugh out loud at this half take-off, half homage to one of America's greatest love stories. Sandra Selente ("Selene") is a supermodel whose favorite movie of all time is Gone with the Wind. When she finds herself transported back in time to the old South, Selene's only point of reference is the movie. She quickly learns she is not cut out to be a Southern belle. When James Baptiste rescues her, she declares him to be her very own Rhett--until she discovers he has a penchant for blondes. Thank goodness that for Selene "tomorrow is another day." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

Voodoo drums in the swamps of Louisiana and herons making melancholy calls to each other -- sounds that whisk you back to the times of sugar plantations, Southern drawls, arrow-backs? Wait a minute! Try aerobics! That's what happens when you send a New York bred and raised fashion model back in time. Unfortunately for Selene, that's not all you get. You also get arrogant Southern gentlemen telling you how unattractive you are, how thin and lanky you are, how much you look like a wart-hog. It's enough to make a grown woman cry with disgust. Time travel sure can deal you a weak deck. Of course, crying is not the way to make James, Selene's Rhett-in-disguise, sit up and take notice. Perhaps a few blonde jokes could bring out that beautiful smile with the dimple. If it weren't for all the heavy burdens he faces every day, maybe she could put a dent in that chauvinistic demeanor. Selene's growing feelings of inferiority are difficult to overcome. James needs her help -- to teach his young son, to be a confidante to his mother, to bring order to his chaotic household in Bayou Noir. James gets more than he bargained for -- an aerobics instructor, a group therapist, and a cosmetologist for the women of his ramshackle plantation. She even runs to his assistance in the dead of night, becoming his protector when the ghost of his deceased wife raises a knife over his sleeping body. James and Selene are pitted mind against mind, body against body, heart against heart. Often catching each other in daydreams that melt their very souls. Could he be her Rhett? Would she become his Scarlett? In a world she didn't understand, Selene finds love with a man who would never know her world. Out on the bayou, embers flare. The fire begins to burn slowly at first. A molten kiss spreads throughout Selene's body. James is caught by its power. They are lost in its rage. Their aggressions forge a deeper trust...a deeper love. The future would be theirs to define.Clever, enchanting, and funny -- Sandra Hill has developed a style that not only brings a tingle to your heart, but a smile to your face! Travel through time with Selene, who will venture into the cold, hidden recesses of the Louisiana bayou. Meet James, the man who will take her to the edge of the world and hold her there! You can feel their heat in the palm of your hand...almost like the burning of Atlanta! Smell the gumbo that Blossom's cooking. Never has a romance entered the senses the way of Frankly, My Dear.Karen Ellington -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. 5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST NOVEL I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME!!, October 9, 1997
By A Customer
Ms. Hill outdid herself with this brazing, wonderful, laugh-a-minute novel. I laughed until I cried and cried until I laughed. To be honest, I am not one for time-travel and precivil war novels, but I decided to buy it because of the cover. That may sound a bit off beat (never judge a book by it's cover) but just one look at James and Selene and you know they were meant to be. By the second page, I was hooked. I didn't put it down until the end and I was ever so sorry that it ended! A story like that should last forever! Ms. Hill is a terrific romance writer (and the only novelest who ever answered a fan letter from me). Thank you, Sandra, for the many great novels and the fan appreciation!

I love Sandra Hill and this book is one of her best. I can not believe that some people did not love this story. The combination of the humor mixed with romance makes it one of the most enjoyable books I ever read. I did laugh out loud in parts, the characters are great and the story interesting. i highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny , very passionate book, August 11, 2000

This is the second book by Sandra, the first being THE LAST VIKING and it is absolutely wonderful. Sandra is fast becoming one of my most favorite authors (LYNN KURLAND being my favorite). I howled at her dumb blonde jokes and her arrow-back (aerobics)classes with the servants.

Selene's character is just right. She is not the typical blonde Southern Belle, she is a very feisty, passionate woman, even if she doesn't think so. You'll be in stitches at some of the things she get's up to.

She helps the women on the plantation with their problems - especially where it concerns their men. She tells them about a sexual position called The Perfect Fit. The morning after the women had learned about it was hillarious. The men were walking about with smiles like the cat who got the cream. Everyone knew what they had all been up to the night before. This book is so incredibly funny, you'll die laughing.

James is a dream come true for any woman, (look at the cover and see what I mean). He is just as passionate as Selene. When they make love the pages just sizzle with the heat.

Sandra has wrote a very funny and a very passionate book. The other characters in the story are wonderful, with the exception of Victor and James' wife Giselle. I'm looking forward to reading Ettienne's story in SWEETER, SAVAGE LOVE, but first i'm going to read DESPERADO because James and Selene are in that one as well. Well done Sandra.
