If you like the Sinatra songbook, and you like modern post-bop jazz, this is the album for you. This band delivers the goods. The lineup:
Per Goldschmidt - baritone sax
Tom Harrell - trumpet
Niels Lan Doky - piano
Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen - bass
Alvin Queen - drums

Highlights of the album for me are the exuberant "Come Fly With Me" and Tom 'Ballad-Master' Harrell with Goldschmidt on the poignant "A Man Alone".

Been listening to Baritone and Alto lately and this was a charmer I bought on whim.It paid off.And with aces like Tom Harell,Alvin Queen, and euro aces like dutch pianist Nils Lan Doky (who in my mind with Carsten Dahl among others shows Euro Jazz is in good hands) and NHOP.Don't expect Nelson Riddle here these guys really burn these tunes up.The album as whole is strong post bop but has no real standout "hooks" to make it a five star. It's not a "blowing session" by any means but has a sameness to it that keeps it from being better.Still once in my CD player have to keep it in.All play string here and Goldschmidt is one to watch. But this CD is worth it just to dig on NHOP who late in his career is such a monster in terms of independence and cohesion with group at same time.In my mind he is the standout and make this worth it on it's own.I lament his loss but his cannon is so large we can rejoice in that.Let's hear more from Mr.Goldschmidt.
Cheers
Chazz
