4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting film. Certainly worth the sale rental.
Interesting film. Certainly worth the sale rental. Worth a watch if for nothing else than the interesting and somewhat unique settings. I'll be heavily recommending this to a few friends very into The City of Lost Children and Donnie Darko.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea
This movie is a dark romance/tragedy. Four people come together in the end but it takes most of the movie to figure out what is going on. It left me with a feeling of 'Is this all there is... you must be kidding'. Overall, the acting is as good as the plot allows. This is not an action flick. Franklyn is not a super hero or a comic book villian. I guess it is not my kind...

5.0 out of 5 stars My kind of movie, December 13, 2009

I had never heard of this movie, and was wary of renting it because of the rating, but then realized that it only has 2 ratings so far and the person that rated it badly was probably either drunk or a complete idiot. This is a great movie. A dive into the subconscious makes people that enjoy "Transformers" or "GI joe" cringe, I'm sure, but this has a great mix of the "other" stuff: Surrealism, characters that breathe instead of mannequins, subtlety and an actual story. I'm an amazon movie junkie, and this is the best movie I've seen rentable so far. A+

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychology Thriller?, October 19, 2011

This is an excellent movie if you like the nuances of pyschology. The merger of subjective parallel worlds is the subject of the movie, and happens in the real world more often than we might admit. This film attempts to treat the concept of reality perception.

The movie was imaginative, acting was extraordinary, a lot of effort put into story and atmosphere.. I don't understand where the other reviewers feel it fell short.

2.0 out of 5 stars I didn't like it., July 4, 2010

The bizarre looking city with the guy in the mask is really only 1/5 of this movie. Most of it is set in our world and is about average people. I use that word "about" loosely. Of this one and a half hour movie about an hour of it is just people sitting or standing around looking sad. It focuses way to hard on trying to set a mood and not actually doing anything. You could remove half the film and no one would notice. I don't think I've been this bored in a long time.

This movie is a unique view of the world from inside the mind of a insane person.
Think "One Flew Over The Cookoo's Nest" in first person steampunk.
A cool movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just because your Unique doesn't mean your great..., February 4, 2010

I thought the acting in this movie was very realistic, it was good enough to where it seemed like I was watching, somebodies real life story..

Video quality was really good.

The story itself... was extremely unique in the way it was done. But honestly, just because it was unique, didn't make it a great movie. The plot twist were more annoying than actually being something worth while.

I would of rather our main guy. The one who wears the mask, of been a cliche'd hero. Because it would of been better. But it turns out, its a whole another deal.. He's not really a hero... etc.. I can't say much or I'd ruin the plot.

I will say, it all comes together at the end, now is it a pretty bow? no, but it does come together a certain degree.

Overall, its a decent movie. When the world switches over, to our Main guys world... He see's things differently, you have some really cool visuals. As someone who loves concept art, that made it worth while to me. If you like to be kept on your toes, and wondering whats going on... I'd say this movie is probably right up your ally.

Movies are like books, its a matter of perspective. Just because I found the movie to be 'So So' don't let that scare you away. Rent it for yourself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Psychological sci-fi thriller, January 14, 2012

"Franklyn" encompasses an interesting cross-section of genres. The film is composed of two worlds: Meanwhile City, brimming in sci-fi elements and painted in dark gothic tones with iron fisted religious fanaticism. This is paralleled by modern-day London, while seemingly mundane - having mysteries of it's own. Strong psychological elements bind Meanwhile City to modern day London, and the ending ties up "just enough" elements to satisfy, while leaving a few riddles open for discussion.

One of the issues with the film, for some viewers, is the main character Franklyn. He appears mostly in trench coat with a uniquely stiched - almost featureless hood, save for large blackened eye sockets. It would seem that this stylistic choice holds too much baggage - E.G. invoking expectations approaching the Watchman's masked vigilante "Rorschach". While not a superhero, Franklyn is the tragically intriguing fulcrum of the film; Ryan Phillippe carries the part well. Interestingly enough, the promotional posters featured an unmasked version of Franklyn.

The movie instantly engrosses viewers within the otherworldly Meanwhile city, and takes it's time wrapping modern-day London around you - all the while leading you to the subtle intersection of the worlds and characters. This is an intellectual journey through a science-fiction/ psychological-thriller. It's deeper than "The Book of Eli", but not quite as challenging as "Solaris".

Intellectual sci-fi isn't for everyone. Combining the former with a psychological thriller is risky, and will certainly alienate some. Still - you have to commend the filmmakers for the job they did on such a limited budged.

I hold well-done independent films in high regard and really wanted to rate this 4 stars, but the ending smacks of inevitability. It's not that there isn't a payoff, but rather that the film starts a lot stronger than it ends.

I was very excited by the previews for this film. It looked viscerally captivating, mysterious, and ominous. And half of it was. The movie follows two separate worlds, and I wish they simply left the one half dealing with our world out of it. The movie had great promise, and I am convinced that if they were to redo this movie, focusing only on the visually striking world, it would be a massive success.

All in all, though, it's a good movie to watch. I would definitely watch it again, but I think I would just chapter skip to the parts which interested me.
