Book Description

3 and upP and up

One day Fran found a flowerpot filled with soil. "I will grow this flower," Fran said. "Grow flower." But the tips stayed tiny.

Fran is determined to get her flower bud to grow. But what do you feed a fussy flower? Fran figures that the flower will flourish on her own favorite foods--pizza, spaghetti, even strawberry ice cream! But the stubborn bud refuses to bloom. Finally, Fran discovers that a meal fit for a girl isn't necessarily a meal fit for a flower. Just when she gets fed up, Mother Nature steps in  with a smorgasborg of sunshine and rain...Won't Fran be surprised!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-When a little girl finds a flowerpot filled with soil and a tiny green sprout, she announces to her comical pup, Fred, "I will grow this flower." She watches it every day, feeding it all her favorite foods-pizza, cheeseburger, spaghetti, chocolate chip cookies, and strawberry ice cream. The astonished pet watches as she even offers up one of his juicy bones. Finally, when nothing happens, she throws the plant outside in disgust: "Silly flower!" There, nourished by soft rain and warm sunshine, the tiny plant begins to grow and one day surprises Fran with a big, beautiful flower. The expressive, full-page illustrations rendered in creamy primary and pastel colors on textured paper depict the small girl's misguided efforts as well as her ultimate delight. Right on target for a young child.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful book share!, April 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Fran's Flower (Hardcover)
I own this book and recently purchased it for my son's kindergarten classroom. I read it to the class because they were getting ready to plant flowers to be braught home on Mothers Day and it was the first day of spring! The children can relate to the things that Fran likes and tries to feed her flower! They all enjoyed the book and laughed many times. We talked about the illustrations when we turned the pages and they really liked the bright and beautiful colors used. It was FUN reading this book, it kept their interest and most of all it was great seeing the smiles on their faces!

I bought this book the other day--for ME! I loved the illustrations and thought the story was fresh and fun! I, of course, shared it with my 4 year-old daughter, and she had me read it several times! It is now one of OUR favorites!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great storytime book, April 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fran's Flower (Hardcover)
I have been looking to purchase this book since I started teaching preschool 5 years ago. It is a wonderfully, delightful, simple book that explains growing plants. Preschool age children love it because it is silly and they can interact with the book and help determine what is appropriate to feed a flower. Now I work at a library and made sure to purchase this book to donate to our library, specifically for storytimes in the spring.
