This review is from: Frans Hals: The Complete Work (Hardcover)
This is a hefty volume with a good selection of nearly full-page plates with many close-ups that really allow you to see the bravura brushwork. The quality of the plates is pretty good, considering this is an older book. Its easy to see why sargent considered Hals to be the preeminent portraitist among the old masters.

Grimm is thorough and meticulous, though often turgid. There are massive, run-on sentences. More theoretical than Slive, and more of a traditional scholar.
