I received this box set as a gift from someone who knows very little about Classical music. She had recently seen the 1960 film biography of Franz Liszt entitled "Song Without End", starring a young Dirk Bogarde, and was instantly smitten by the charismatic composer's glamorous persona as portrayed in the film. Based on its rather alluring title, I think she thought the set manifested some of the same sort of glamour. And that, of course, is the whole idea behind the collection and its title. But do not be put off by the glaring marketing ploy. Although Liszt has never been a favorite of mine, lately I have been traversing pianist Leslie Howard's (talk about movie stars!) brilliant 99 CD collection of the complete piano music on Hyperion. I find that my opinion of Liszt's music is changing for the (much) better.

This 25 CD/1 DVD Sony box set celebrating the bicentennial and career of the great Hungarian pianist/composer features some of the most iconic performances in the catalog. Included in the set are the Rubinstein/Wallenstein Living Stereo recording of the first piano concerto, Van Cliburn's recording of the second piano concerto under Ormandy, Byron Janis playing the Totentanz under Reiner, Philippe Entremont playing the Hungarian Fantasy under Ozawa. Other pianists playing representative solo works by Liszt include Gary Graffman, Yevgeni Kissin, Jorge Bolet, John Ogdon, Vladimir Horowitz, Sviatoslav Richter, Barry Douglas, Arcadi Volodos, Gerhard Oppitz, Claudio Arrau, Charles Rosen, Murray Perahia, Lazar Berman, Emanuel Ax and many more. The performances are uniformly superb with some of them considered amongst the finest Liszt interpretations ever recorded.

Liszt's orchestral music is well represented as well.

Added Note: it now seems that this box set is listed twice on Amazon, so those interested in it should check both pages in order to be sure that they are getting the best price from any of the sellers offering it here. I can't more links here because this review already contains the maximum number of links allowed by Amazon, but here is the web address for both listings that can be posted into a browser window:

My original review follows:

And so here we have 25 CD's plus one DVD, all jam-packed with music that Sony has painstakingly pulled together, and in doing so they have drawn on quite a broad selection of recordings. I think that they deserve great credit here, for producing something much more carefully thought through than what we see in most box sets, which often simply repackage recordings just as they were previously released (not that such is bad, but I make the point to bring attention to the effort that I'm sure was involved here). As I went through this music, I found that they've taken performances which had previously appeared on a very wide variety of earlier CD releases, and repackaged them here and grouped them together in order to provide more complete and better organized coverage of certain compositions than may have been offered in the recordings that they were sourced from.

For example, take a look at the contents of disc 4 below, Liszt's Années de pèlerinage.

This superb box set is remarkable both for its quality and its absurdly low price: $22 for 26 discs! I bought this set because it was the only way I could replace my 2-piano version of the "Weinachtsbaum." But there are plenty of other wonderful inclusions, such as the music for Cello accompanied by Stephen Hough. I was also particularly impressed by Angela Brownridge's "Annees de Pelerinage," which is as good or better than anybody out there, including Bolet.

The discs come in cardboard sleeves all in different colors, which is a nice way to package these large box sets.

There's a lot here, only a little of which I was familiar with beforehand. I generally like orchestral music, but the piano works were fascinating, as were the transcriptions (especially of the Beethoven symphonies). The vocal works were slightly less interesting, but I'm not a classical vocal fan anyway. One piece in particular, however, made me want to hear it live, so I claim relevance on Liszt's behalf to that extent. Sometimes inspiring, always worth listening to.
