It might seem pointless to review a box set of Schubert's symphonies selling for $150 on the used market, but since all of these readings can be downloaded at other music sites, I thought a somewhat detailed review would be helpful. Wand turns out to have something to say here, and his cologne Radio SO, if not first-rate, is certainly up to Schubert's symphonic writing, which is rarely challenging (only the finale of Sym. 9 comes to mind as truly difficult, and then only for the scurrying violin line). RCA's sound s good, too -- they are licensed from Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, who recorded the cycle in the Eighties. Since Wand seems to have been at his freshest before he hit the big time in Berlin and around the world, I found myself intrigued.

Sym. 1 -- We are off to an encouraging start with a vivacious first movement that communicates joy. Unlike Karajan and Bohm, both with the Berlin Phil., the music isn't inflated beyond its modest goals. the slow movement sings and moves at a true ambling Andante. The Minuet is vigorous and not at all heavy-footed. The finale's Allegro vivace is a trifle subdued and Haydnesque, but what's not to love? This is a reading that smiles throughout.

Sym. 2 - Schubert was 16 when he wrote his first symphony; its successor appeared between the ages of 17 and 18. It sounds more "schubrtian," the idiom carrying his special ebullience and vibrancy, even though the orchestration and harmony aren't really much changed. Wand begins with a rousing first movement that captures the music's high spirits quite beautifully. As before, the Andante moves at a nice amble without the slightest pretension. Wand finds a bit more Sturm und Drang in the Minuet than most; it's invigorating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and Passionate Music Making August 9, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I am new to Gunter Wand but from what I have heard he was a top notch conductor. I own some DVDs where he conducts some Bruckner and Schubert symphonies with the Radio Ochestra of Hamburg from late 90s. I am very impressed with those but these recordings are even better. Wand doesn't move much but all the musicians play with great enthusiasm and zealot for him. Something between Carlos Kleiber and H. von Karajan. I am not going to write about every particular symphony but express my overall impression of this set.

I am very please I had the chance to aquire this set in Europe and it is very unfortunate it is unavailable here in the US. The orchestra(Cologne Radio Orchestra) sounds very well rehearsed and they enjoy playing for Wand. I would not say he has some fenomenal insights interpretationwise but all the symphonies are played beautifully and I did not notice a weak spot. The playing is a little more delicate than the BPO Bohm recordings and the sound is much clearer. The exciting moments are thrilling without being too uncontrolled or brutal. Wand's tempos are just perfect. Nether too rushed or sluggish. His interpretations sound like there is no other way this music can be played.

If you have a chance get this set and deffinately try his Bruckner Symphony Cycle. It is really good as well. Otherwise you may try Harnoncourt's Schubert set with RCO which is easier to aquire nowadays

4.0 out of 5 stars The ones I've heard are top notch May 19, 2009

I have only heard three of these symphonies - Nos. 3, 5 and 6 - but Wand's versions are as good or better than any other versions that I have heard. I have four other versions of No. 5, and Wand's tempos are by far the best, in my opinion. The sound is excellent as well. Since I haven't heard the other symphonies, I will rate it 4 stars. The ones I have heard are definitely 5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow and Shallow October 20, 2005
Format:Audio CD
I was not impressed at all with the symphonies in this collection. All of them were lackluster in some fashion and were usually too slow in their interpretation. I wouldn't recommend buying this set.

The 8th symphony was not only slow but seemed short on musicians and without much depth: it may have been the acoustics in which it was recorded as well. I didn't particularly find the 9th symphony intersting either as it had no strength but it was slightly better than the 8th. In some of the other symphonies some of the sections sound like they're almost out of tune.

I strongly regret having bought this performance and would have bought something different had I known of its deficiencies. This box set is therefore not really a good investment. You will probably get better choices on Naxos at a cheap price compared to these expensive cheap performances.
