The Franzus UK-to-US adapter is the only product that you can be sure will accept a polarized two-pin US plug, that is, a plug that has one pin wider than the other so that you can only insert the plug the correct way around. This type of plug is often fitted to hairdryers and other products that might become dangerous if the polarity (live/neutral) is not preserved. Note that the device must be an international device that can operate on 220/240 volts: the adapter is not a transformer. Note also that this is a two-pin adapter: you cannot use it with a three-pin US plug. Many similar products may look, in photographs, as though they accept polarized US plugs; but (based on my experience buying such products) what is shipped is never a polarized adapter.

This made travel to Ireland simpler than expected. If all you need to plug in is electronic devices, they usually can handle 120/240V and you don't need a converter - just this adapter. Look on the device and it will tell you. But don't plug your wife's curling iron directly into it.
