4.0 out of 5 stars Well assembled oldies compilation, July 25, 2005

This review is from: Frat Rock 3: Grandson of Frat Rock (Audio CD)
Its sad that most oldies stations nowadays are turning into exact replicas of the so called "Classic" Rock stations (or at least in my region). Hey, Billy Joel and Boston are all well and good, but oldies? No. Rhino's "Frat Rock" series represent what oldies stations should really be putting into rotation. "Twist & Shout", "Hang on Sloopy", "Surfin' Bird", and "Johnny B. Goode" are amoung the many classics here. The version of Del Shannon's "Do You Want to Dance" here is better than the one contained on the same label's "Greatest Hits". As with all Rhino reissues, the linear notes are both fantastic and informative. Its always interesting to find out about those one-hit wonders whose hit song everyone knew and loved, but had no idea where it was coming from. There are a few flaws, as "Chug-A-Lug" and "Good Old Rock & Roll" are out of place (not bad tunes though). And why not include both parts of "What'd I Say?". Overall, this is a great disc for the casual oldies fan looking for a way to own these hits, and is better than Vol. One (I don't own the second volume, but the selection looks like it'd be the best of the series).

4.0 out of 5 stars Some great 60s' fun rock tunes., June 21, 2001
This review is from: Frat Rock 3: Grandson of Frat Rock (Audio CD)
About the only thing I didn't like about this CD was the title. There are some real rock essentials on this Rhino CD: "Twist & Shout" and "Shout" by the Isley Brothers, "Tequila" by the Champs, "Liar, Liar" by the Castaways and my personal favorite, "Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen, to quote Rhino, "among the most inspiringly deranged sounds ever to emerge from a car's dashboard".

Rhino has done their usual great job in producing this CD and it comes with a very informative booklet.

4.0 out of 5 stars All in All, A good C.D., September 20, 2010

Nice selection of tunes.
Fills out my oldies collection well.
As I have the rest of the series.
The original hits, to be sure.
Gimme Gimme Good Lovin could be a little cleaner in sound, for my taste.
But maybe that's the way it was recorded.
I've yet to find one that's better sound than this c.d.
I say, if you don't have the tunes on it, get it!

Good overall collection of tracks, some of which are very hard to find anywhere else, including the Strangeloves, Cat Mother, the Standels, and The Midnighters. The later is not even listed as being charted by Joel Whitburn. God knows where Rhino got this.

The Liner Notes are below par for Rhino. There is no composer information and no dates of the tracks. I had to look those up myself. However, there are nice photos and brief bios of the artists.

Another irritating point, and this cost me a good 30 minutes of time, was the fact that when ripping this to the computer or iPod, the CD insists upon listing "various artists" as the artist on the track. I had to go back and manually change the files in the computer and on iTunes.
