Freak'n Fantastic,
By Don Cruz "Donny" (San Antonio, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Freaks!: How to Draw Fantastic Fantasy Creatures (Fantastic Fantasy Comics) (Paperback)
What a great book! I do furry art and needed some pointers on how to draw animal people forms. This is the only book I've ever seen that explains how to do it. Easy and precise instructions on all types of animal people, cats, dogs, turtles, bears, etc. You name it, it is in here. It teaches anatomy and really helped me with animal type legs with three joints. I like Steve's art, but Brett Booth is the master! Book was worth it just to stare at his fabulous characters. Please, please, please, do another book just like this one, but with more cartoon furry type art.

Animal People Fun,

I bought this book for my 12 year old son because he loves to draw comic book and video game characters. I was surprised at how well his drawings improved by just using some of the simple advice from the author. It is neat to see him come home from school and go into his room to draw instead of immediately turning on the tv or a video game.

Great Book! The title is a little misleading, Fantasy makes me think of Hobbits and Trolls, but this book is all about Animal People or Animorphs. Great art, great instructions, and helpful advice.

...But NOT for beginner artists:SThe book itself is pretty cool with lots of characters and pretty pictures to look at. That alone, is ALOT of inspiration:) BUT.... And this is the bad part about the book... I'm not learning much from it:( There are very little hints on HOW to actually draw something. I'm not advanced enough for this book as i need step-by-step guides, wich this book does not contain much of. Sadly:( It's probably a really great book for the more advanced artists, but i cannot recomend this book for beginner artists like myself... I'm sorry. I also cannot recomend any other books as i haven't bought that many yet. But by all means, if you really WANT this book, the pictures in it makes it worth buying:) Inspiration is also an important part on your way to becoming a master artist:) And besides, the more people who buy it, the bigger the chances gets for a follow-up book:) Wich will probably be better for us non-professionals:p

Great idea book,

I bought this book and refer to it continually when I need ideas or inspiration. It is not a traditional how to draw book in that there isn't step by step instructions on how to draw each "animal head person" in the book, but guidelines. The expectation, I think, is that the reader will practice putting together the basic shapes and learn from the abundance of illustrations. This would be a good book to pair with another drawing book. A lot of the poses are superhero style. There isn't a huge focus on basic drawing skills; for younger readers, Lee Hammond covers these well in her drawing books. Older readers might want to check out "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".

This is the best book ever written (and the only I think) about Anthropomorphic creatures.. It helped me so much. It's goes through all the importent stuff that you need to know before drawing humans and animals. And a lot of the illustrations are drawn by my fave artist; Brett Booth. His art is to die for. You learn how to draw eyes, wings, legs, torso and so on.. This is definetly the best book I've ever bought. And at a reasonable price. I LOVE IT.. =3

Fantastic Guides to Anatomy and Hybrids!,

This book has truly exceed my expectation. I have read Steve Miller's other book, Thunder Lizard, and expected a good guidance. However, this book just meet more than that. It gave you insight of anatomy in which most books lack in that aspect. Also, expand your visualization of "hybrid" in way where you can actually draw them in combination without having "cheesy standout." Steve Miller's guides are a must for aspiring comic artist and young artists as well. This book is very useful for expert artists!

Amazing Animal People,
By DarkMercury (Tampa, Fl) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Freaks!: How to Draw Fantastic Fantasy Creatures (Fantastic Fantasy Comics) (Paperback)
For everyone who wants to learn how to draw animal/human hybrids this is a fantastic book for reference! I will warn you I do not think this book is for beginners. The techniques are a bit more advanced, but if you have a basic understanding of drawing human anatomy then this is a good step in a different direction. You will more than likely need other books of reference for animal features. For the fans who have been buying the Drawing Manga series and who are wanting to learn to draw the Cat-people this is a perfect book. The Cat-people section is simply amazing! This book touches on the Manga style a little but it is primarily a book more in the American style of comic art. There are many different animal-human hybrids in this book. Ranging from domestic and predatory cats, domestic and wild dogs/wolves, lizard/reptiles, insects, elephants, primates and a whole other myriad of human/animal combinations. If you are a fan of mutants, lycanthrops and other strange things I definately recommend this book to everyone! Please remember though, this is not a book for beginners, it's a good reference point for the intermediate and advanced artists, but even if you are a beginner it's worth the money either way!
