Freaks like me!, April 8, 2002
Joseph E. Scalia's tale of Hildy and her friends shows what high school can be like for teenagers not deemed by their classmates as the "in crowd." His years of teaching high school English and Creative Writing on Long Island, New York gave him the ability to draw accurate depictions of the many varied players that make up the game of fitting in. FREAKs shows how three classic "misfits" can find a way to celebrate their different-ness and experience successful relationships. A reader of this delightful and encouraging novel will experience the range of emotions from disappointment and grief to pride and happiness. Scalia scores a hit with FREAKs that will be enjoyed by readers of all ages, but more importantly will be thoroughly appreciated by teenagers experiencing the angst of surviving the dreaded junior and high school years.
