Charming Text, Charming Heroine, Charming Illustrations...
on October 31, 2007
...and an invaluable message!
Our family has already put Freckleface Strawberry to the test numerous times---to great response..from the read-ees and the read-er alike!
While confronting and acknowledging her heroine's freckled complexion, Ms. Moore established qualities for young Freckleface Strawberry in which she took great and justifiable pride.
My daughter (age 6) just kept saying "That's me!" and smiling throughout the book. Her twin brother loved that a boy in the background's thought bubble indicated that he couldn't ride a bike (he can't either!).
The story is told with readily accessible believability, and lively illustrations that meet the challenge of the energetic prose.
We'll be waiting in line for the next tale of Freckleface Strawberry---until then, we'll keep reading this one...and remembering that our differences---whether we like them or not---are part of who we are.
(and chances are, our friends like us "as is!")
A great first book, from an insightful new voice in children's literature.
