Charming Text, Charming Heroine, Charming Illustrations...,
This review is from: Freckleface Strawberry (Hardcover)
...and an invaluable message!
Our family has already put Freckleface Strawberry to the test numerous times---to great response..from the read-ees and the read-er alike! While confronting and acknowledging her heroine's freckled complexion, Ms. Moore established qualities for young Freckleface Strawberry in which she took great and justifiable pride. My daughter (age 6) just kept saying "That's me!" and smiling throughout the book. Her twin brother loved that a boy in the background's thought bubble indicated that he couldn't ride a bike (he can't either!). The story is told with readily accessible believability, and lively illustrations that meet the challenge of the energetic prose. We'll be waiting in line for the next tale of Freckleface Strawberry---until then, we'll keep reading this one...and remembering that our differences---whether we like them or not---are part of who we are. (and chances are, our friends like us "as is!") A great first book, from an insightful new voice in children's literature.

Red headed mother of red headed daughters..thumbs up!,
By Eric "pilotdaddy" (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Freckleface Strawberry (Hardcover)
This book was made for my family! We are all red heads. I myself have tons of freckles and it was constantly brought up by other kids. You have freckles on your knees? The worst was when a kid sitting next to me tried playing connect the dot. This book would have been great for me growing up, so the next best thing was to get it for my daughters. They don't have freckles yet, but I assume it will happen at some point. My almost three year old loves the book. She talks about Freckleface's red hair (just like her's) and then points to Freckleface's freckles then to mine. The pictures are well drawn and are very colorful catching the kids' attnetion. My daughter asks for this almost every night. At the end she loves saying, "Lives happily ever after". I think the message is, others may see your freckles as something different, but that's what makes you unique. I hope my daughter picks this up as she gets older.

Moore's Childhood Adventures,
By Bennet Pomerantz "Bennet Pomerantz, AUDIOWORLD" (College Park, Maryland) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)

Freckleface Strawberry is a wonderful children's book from Actress Julianne Moore.
Like actor/author John Lithgow (Third Rock from the Sun) who also writea children's books, she capture that child=like innocence with simple phrases and a story that touches anyone from ages 5-100. Moore shows a loving she has for children's lit in this her first book. One would hope she writes many more children's books, she has a nack for it It is amazing that a talented actress like Ms Moore can write such an engaging children's book. I only wish it was on CD to listen to this cute story again, but parents who read to their children will love reading this over and over again. She said, in an interview on the Today show (10/19/07) that the main character's name is one she was called as a child...and it shows her loving for that nickname and all it stands for to her Sometimes their are times that book art don't mesh with text. This time I am happilly wrong. The illustrations of the book are so animated thet they seem to move off the page. The art work work so well crafted that these illustrations could be the basis for a short animated cartoon of this book. This is NOT FOR CHILDREN ONLY...this is a book for the child is all of us Bennet Pomerantz AUDIOWORLD

MUST READ!,
This review is from: Freckleface Strawberry (Hardcover)
I think this is a great book for kids and even adults will like it. I think this because I read this book to my class and we all enjoyed it. Freckleface Strawberry is a unforgettable character because she is funny when she tries to get rid of her freckles. One reason I think kids will like this book is because Freckleface Strawberry does lots of different things to try to hide her freckles. She tries to use a marker, a mask, and she tries to scrub them off! My students were laughing out loud when they saw her with the mask on. None of her friends even knew it was her! Another reason I think this is a good book is because the illustrations show lots of details. For example, you can see what Freckleface Strawberry is feeling because of the way the illustrator draws her facial expressions. The speech bubbles and thinking bubbles also tell you more information that the words don't. I like reading the speech bubbles and thinking bubbles because they give you more information. A final reason I think this is a good book is because it teaches you a lesson. Freckleface Strawberry learns that even though she doesn't like her freckles they are a special part of her that makes her unique (that's a fancy word for special). She can't get rid of them so she has to accept them as a special part of her. I think everyone should read this book because it has a good message and is funny. If you like books like Junie B. Jones and Horrible Harry you will also like Freckleface Strawberry.

Mother of a Freckleface Strawberry,
This review is from: Freckleface Strawberry (Hardcover)
As a mother of very spunky, wonderful children with BEAUTIFUL red hair and freckles I wanted to make sure they appreciate what they were born with. I wanted my children to embrace ALL of the qualities that make them different from everyone else. This book is a good example of how being different can be both a blessing and a curse and how you can turn a curse into a blessing. I really appreciate Ms. Moore for sharing this with everyone and helping children try to look positively about themselves especially in a society that is so critical of each other. I am very proud of my strawberries and I'm super happy to have found a book that celebrates them. :) We love these books and can't wait for more to come out (hint hint to Ms. Moore. LOL). My lovely daughter begs me to read them all the time. A really good friend recommended this book to me and I can't thank her enough. What a fantastic book!!!

for my redhaired freckled faced grandson,

This review is from: Freckleface Strawberry (Hardcover)
I have not reviewed a book in a long time, but I really loved this one. It is going to my redhaired freckled faced grandson for his 9th birthday in August. The book is so well done and certainly speaks, not only to redhaired freckled face kids, but to any child who is "a little different." I think it will make any "different" kid feel pretty special.
I heard Julianne Moore talk about the book on TV and it sounded great to me--and when I got it, it was even more so. The illustrations are adorable. I really do recommend it--fun, touching, and special. Grandmere

Freckleface Strawberry,
This review is from: Freckleface Strawberry (Hardcover)
This is a delightfully written and illustrated book my grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed. I don't usually spend a lot of money for hard-cover books but this is certainly worth the price. My 6 yr. old granddaughter had heard it at Kindergarten and talked about it for weeks! Our local branch of the library didn't have it so I went to Amazon (of course) found it as well as the new release by the two talented women. Julianne Moore and LeUyen Pham collaborate so well together with these books. Easy to understand, the words and illustrations deliver a message that all children are unique and are liked for who they are and not how they look. I highly recommend this book.

A LESSON IN FRIENDSHIP,
This review is from: Freckleface Strawberry (Hardcover)
This debut children's book by acclaimed actress Julianne Moore teaches youngsters a valuable lesson - "...the things that make you different also make you YOU." In this case the 7-year-old heroine known as "Freckleface Strawberry" is covered with freckles. Not only that but her hair is red, not auburn but really, really red. She has no idea where her freckles came from as her mother, father, and sister don't have any. Nonetheless, there they are and they show no signs of going away. In many ways she is very much like her friends - she is short, she just lost another tooth, and she can ride a bike. But, to her dismay these friends always have something to say about her freckles. Someone says she's "dotted;" another asks to smell them. So, she tries everything she can think of to get rid of those troublesome spots. Nothing works, which is when she learns the meaning of true friendship. Illustrations by LeUyen Pham are bright, perky, and alive. - Gail Cooke

What a great, fantastically illustrated story. Wonderful resource to use in teaching kids to "love the skin they're in"! I also have Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully and am looking forward to reading more of her books.
