5.0 out of 5 stars Not just ice.
Some have mention using hot water to make stronger clearer ice and that works, but I got to thinking... what else could I make shot glasses from? I melted some Jolly Ranchers and made shot glasses from those... turned out awesome. Next I'll try some chocolate. Also was thinking of using just plain melted sugar. 3.0 out of 5 stars Cool and Novel...But Messy
This is a fun and novel idea but has only limited use.

Obviously, ice melts and that poses some problems with serving, using and disposing of them. Drinking them is fun, but they get your fingers cold, slippery and wet. And if you've made it out of juice instead of water, you get cold, wet AND sticky. After using them you need a way to dispose of them...

Originally I received this from a friend as a gift and we've had so much fun with it that I bought it for a girlfriend that was turning 21. These are great because it's silicone and they come out of the mold pretty easily. Here are my suggestions to anyone that purchases them: Use a cold beverage in them otherwise they start to melt to quickly. To make more than the four, store them in the freezer on wax paper after removing. Try something fun like adding a bit of grenadine or lime juice after filling with water, it'll settle on the bottom which will end up being the rim of the shot glass and it'll give a bit of flavor with your shot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cool and Novel...But Messy, December 20, 2006
This is a fun and novel idea but has only limited use.

Obviously, ice melts and that poses some problems with serving, using and disposing of them. Drinking them is fun, but they get your fingers cold, slippery and wet. And if you've made it out of juice instead of water, you get cold, wet AND sticky. After using them you need a way to dispose of them quickly, because your guests are left holding an empty, cold, melting shot glass that they can't really set down anywhere or reuse (unless they have a glass to put it in and use as an ice cube).

One idea is to present a shot of liquor/liquid that complements what they're already drinking, so they can drop the ice shot glass (with or without the shot) into the cup. But even this requires careful coordination to make sure the cups are large enough and their glass isn't too full. The shot glasses are surprisingly heavy.

The last problem to mention is when the alcohol melts through the ice shot glass and starts spilling out the bottom. Sometimes this happens quickly, spilling the alcohol out onto the counter where you're pouring, or onto your hapless guest when you're handing it to them. I recommend using already-chilled alcohol to help slow that down, and to serve the filled shot glasses as quickly as possible.

Overall, these provide exactly what you expect from an ice shot glass. They're easy to make, look neat, offer some novelty but aren't good for more than a quick impression and a few minutes before melting becomes a reality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neat novelty, January 17, 2008

This will last you a party or three, before you lose interest. The whole freezing thing can get in the way of your drinking. But otherwise it's pretty neat.

Suggestion: Fill it with hot watter and let it stand out for a while before finally freezing it. Hot watter contains less gas in mixture. The less gases you have mixed in with the water, the less bubbles will form upon freezing, this will give you stronger clearer ice that will last longer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its Good if your only making 4, February 8, 2006
For a fraternity party i made about 300 of these. The only place they dont melt is in the freezer, even in bags deep inside large coolers of ice these little guys melted to the point of uselessness. If your only maing 4 they are very impressive and add quite a bit of novlety. On average the shot glasses should last around 20 minutes at room temperature, handling room temperature alcohol. It also helps if you put these in the freezer for at least double the suggested time ( 8 or so hours)

The coolest thing about these is that you don't have to use water to make shot glasses, I have made them from hard candy, chocolate and gummy worms(BAD IDEA) and I am sure there are many other candies and materials you could melt down and make shot glasses out of these. And chocolate shot glasses are a HUGE hit, you just had some buttershots in your chocolate shot glass... Chomp chomp chomp.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun at a party, especially if it is an outside party, December 13, 2011

Length:: 2:23 Mins

I'm really not the kind of guy who enjoys doing "shots." I'm more into sipping some good Scotch, no ice or water, over a long period of time. However, I have friends who enjoy a cold shot of something at a party or gathering. That is why I bought this mold. It produces four decent sized shot glasses make of ice. This is not for sipping or even drinking quickly and refilling. They are for shooting, downing the beverage as fast as possible. If you are outside then your guests can smash them on the patio like Greeks smashing plates at a wedding.

I think that a creative mind could come up with all kinds of uses for these. An Irish Car Bomb, Tequila shots, Vodka shots, flaming shots, etc. I think that they work best when a cold liquor is added. I decided to show this mold in action so I made this short video review. I hope that it is helpful to you!

4.0 out of 5 stars cool party idea, February 2, 2008
It's a great idea for a party or 21st gift because it's unique and unexpected. They work for the most part. Sometimes air holes are created that allows for your drink to leak out. Other times the bottoms aren't totally flat and i don't understand the cause for this. I think you just need a really flat surface for them to form and to just check that they have friezed properly. When they do frieze properly their a lot of fun. They come out of the container relatively easily as it's very flexible and not hard plastic.

Also one reason why i choose this over other similar products was it's faceted bottom. It gives it a different design than the others and i consider it easier to hold onto rather than a cylinder. Something to consider.

5.0 out of 5 stars misconceptions, July 11, 2010

Most people complain about how holes form or they get slippery as they melt or the bottoms don't stay flat. They are looking at in the wrong way. If you have a party coming up, plan ahead, make lots of shots and leave them out of the mold in the freezer.

Here's why: People will not be able to tell they are just ice at first glance. Get a friend or two to take a shot with you and then violently throw down and shatter the glasses on the ground. It is incredibly fun and hilarious as you confuse and mystify your guests. What I am trying to say is just don't expect to use them more than twice. And if you have to, make them out of hard candy or something else... which brings me to my next point, try some hard chocolate or anything you can think of, they will make your night.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fred's First Failure?, July 24, 2009

Well, that's a bit strong, but this is the first Fred or Fred and Friends product that I have found to be obviously inferior to a competitor's product, in this case the Lushology Shot Glass Ice Mold.

With an alternative available the nits to pick here are a little larger. Fred's mold produces only 4 shot glasses: Lushology's, 12. What's more because Fred's mold freezes upside down getting a level, flat bottom on Fred's shot glasses requires care not to overfill the mold AND care in placing it exactly level in your freezer. In contrast since the Lushology mold freezes right side up, any irregularities will be formed on the lip not the bottom. An additional problem that can only develop in the soft silicone Fred mold is an ice bulge into the shot glass, reducing the capacity accordingly, though this seems to be reduced by care in not overfilling.

All in all not quite what I have come to expect from the wackiness experts.

Note: If this is your first introduction to Freds or Fred and Friends products, then I encourage you to check out the others because NOBODY is producing cleverer (or wackier) products for your kitchen or party needs. A small sampling of those that made me stop and smile (and long for) follows:

Fred 12-Ounce Pick Your Nose Paper Cups, Pack of 24
