4.0 out of 5 stars neat-o door mat
I'm using this product as a door mat as the designer intended. I can't really comment on the rubber smell since it stays outside.

It looks pretty good sitting on my front step. It makes a great conversation starter. It's the first thing guests notice and comment on when they arrive. It's a bit too clean to be really convincing, but that's besides the point...

3.0 out of 5 stars cute but smelly
I bought this for my 17 year old son for Christmas. It's really a cute item but the rubber odor is so potent I had a difficult time finding a place to hide it. I kept it in my walk in closet but the rubber smell started permeating my clothing. If the smell weren't so strong I'd give this a five star for a cute thing to put in your kids' rooms.

As far as door-mats go, it works fine. It's no worse than the plain rubber mat it replaced. It's not like the bristly beige mats you find at golf courses which work very well at scrubbing off all kinds of mud and dirt. This mat works best with flat-bottomed dress shoes. It'll have trouble getting mud out of sneakers and hiking boots. It's better suited for shedding water. You just have to ask yourself, how often do you come home with mud on your shoes?

As far as size goes, it's a little wider than your average rectangular mat. Factor in the round shape and I'd say it has approximately 50% more surface area than your average mat.

If you're in the market for a designer door mat (who isn't??) you could do much worse than to buy this or one of its inter-city cousins.

1.0 out of 5 stars They Sent the Wrong City!, August 11, 2009

The Fred Feet First Manhole Mat that arrived at my house looked great! The only problem is that I ordered "New York" and they sent "London." That left me in the lurch for a birthday present. Don't know how to avoid this type of error.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique Mat to Welcome Guests, July 28, 2009

The mats are as described. Not particularly plush but seem quite sturdy, and a nice large size. Beats the common "WELCOME" mat and a good functional alternative. I was torn between which to get, but being a native New Yorker, the choice was made.

I'm always looking for a good deal, and when I got mine it was part of the 4-for-3 promotion (all the designs are). And here's a tip for smart shoppers: often an item in the 4-3 promotion is in a Gold Box deal. If for example you get an item regularly $25 but reduced to $15, get 3 more items priced just below $25. You would think that would make the item you paid $15 for the lowest priced item and the one you would get for free, but it actually is the lowest priced item based on the non-sale price (which is why you would want to get the 3 other items priced below the sale items regular price). So in my case I got 4 items for $65 (2x$25, 1x$15, 1xFREE). Bad explanation, but I hope you get my drift.

Back to the mat; I am very satisfied with this purchase

the other reviewer is right, there is a distinct chemical/rubber smell that can really fill a room. it's a nice looking mat and it seems pretty rugged, so hopefully the smell dissipates quickly.

I love this rug period. Some other reviews indicated a odor I had none.
