Great Stuff,
By Joseph DeMarco (Providence, RI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fred Hersch Trio: Dancing in the Dark (Audio CD)
As usual, Fred displays his unique interpretation of old songs. This rhythm section is great, providing a solid, yet pervious foundation. It is great to hear Fred's contrapuntal improv interweaved with bass & drums. His stuff really works! The recording quality itself is unique -- to my ears it sounds like it was recorded in a wooden room with mic placement far away from the instruments. It's a nice approach that lets the instruments breathe. This is a great recording, definitely worth having.

Splendid,
This review is from: Fred Hersch Trio: Dancing in the Dark (Audio CD)
Fred Hersch has an interesting approach to standards. Sometimes he keeps very close to the tune. At other times, he offers evocations and variations on the tune that are very free form. In one instance, he starts with the tune, moves on to some highly effective variations, then returns to the tune at the end. All in all, this album covers a great range of approaches, with overtones of Bill Evans at times, but also of Keith Jarrett. Hersch technically is a fine pianist, and his tone is always ingratiating. A lovely album.

Great interpretations,

Fred Hersch is a very accomplished piano player. On this outing he selects jazz standards for his trio and arrives at a great place with them. The title track alone is worth the price of admission but everything is good here. Fred plays with a quiet passion and intensity on some very lyrical interpretations. On a few cuts you can definately hear the Bill Evans influence. I can't think of a better jazz piano master to be influenced by. The trio feeds well off each other and puts their own stamp on these tunes. Great piano jazz trio music.
