Editorial Reviews

Review

The book is a very quick and interesting read. It would be worthwhile just to learn about the courage with which Hutchinson battled cancer, but the baseball portion makes it worthy of a high recommendation to any Reds fan.
--Bill Lack, Redleg Nation

In baseball, where seas of statistics seem to remove the emotional aspect of the game, a new book by writer Doug Wilson removes all doubt that America's pastime is played with the human element.
--Steve Price, Redleg Nation

The book is well-researched and well-reported and although a sad story, very much a worthwhile read for baseball fans. --Lew Freedman, The Republic

This is a thoughtful, well written book. The players perspective on the extremely unusual situation adds to the quality of the book. He was an interesting baseball figure who has been lost to history. Recommended.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It truly gives the reader a sense of the kind of man Fred Hutchinson was and his courage and grace in battling terminal cancer. I thought Doug Wilson did a fine job writing the book especially considering he isn't a professional author.

Great job of bringing me back to my first year as a baseball fan and filling in some of the blanks of my knowledge. Hutchinson's courage and equanimity in the wake of his horrible affliction is as inspirational now as it was then. His lesson of living each day to the fullest is important because none of us really know when our own end is near. The other knowledge imparted by this book is that Hutchinson was revered long before his illness. In my opinion, the author did a very effective job of making his points.
