Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Freddie and Flossie and the Little Seed (Bobbsey Twins Ready-To-Read Pre-Level 1) (Paperback)
My husband and I bought this entire set for our daughter with Autism. She is high functioning, but we have had a difficult time teaching her to talk. Until recently, EVERYTHING had to be discretely taught (and many things still do). We have tried to supplement what is going on in therapy by reading books to her at her developmental level. This worked great initially with board books like "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" or "Goodnight Moon" or Mother Goose rhymes. However, we were having a very difficult time making the leap to picture books! She might sit through them if it was a topic she was interested in, but I could tell that she wasn't getting much out of them. (I also used to work as a School Psychologist) Then we stumbled upon The Bobbsey Twins Ready-to-Read books!! These books are very similar to the Dick and Jane books my school used when I was growing up (with undiagnosed Aspergers), and I remembered LOVING them! The pictures are adorable and reminiscent of Dick and Jane. There is minimal text that is focused on what the children are DOING in the picture as opposed to many modern picture books that focus on things you can't see (like feelings) or things that kids don't usually do in a typical day (in other words very abstract). Kids with Aspergers/Autism NEED more books like this!!!!! I just hope the publisher comes out with more of these books!!!!!
