Gr. 3-5. A 32-page biography sounds short, particularly after one takes away 18 pages of front matter, back matter, and full-page, captioned photos. On the other hand, how much is there to say about a soccer prodigy who is barely old enough to drive? Born in Ghana, probably in 1989, Fredua Adu and his family moved to Maryland in 1997. By 2004 he had graduated from high school, become a U.S. citizen, played in the under-17 World Cup Championships, joined D.C. United as the highest-paid player in Major League Soccer, and landed a Nike contract for "about $1 million." With short, direct sentences and plenty of color photographs, the book offers a brief, positive, and attractive introduction to Adu, ending with a chronology, a glossary, short lists of recommended articles and Web sites, and a list of "Works Consulted" (newspaper and magazine articles). With its excellent action photos and simple vocabulary, this volume from the Robbie Reader series will appeal to many middle-school soccer fans as well as those in the target grade range. Does your soccer child want to do a book report or read about today's soccer stars? Well look no further. This beginning chapter book is well written and filled with full color action photographs.
