Book Description

9 and up4 and up
In Freddy Goes Camping, Mr. Camphor's aunts, Minerva and Elmira, were staying with him, much to his disgust. "There's two kinds of aunts," he said. "There's the regular kind, and then there's the other kind. Mine are the other kind." He enlists Freddy's aid in an attempt to rid his house of the ladies, with the result that Freddy and his chums become entangled with some extremely unfriendly ghosts in an abandoned summer hotel. Freddy camps out, goes canoeing, and tosses flapjacks like a pro when he's not mixing it up with the eerie Mr. Eha.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freddy and the ghosts, May 11, 2001

This may well be the best of the Freddy books written by Walter R. Brooks (its only competition is Freddy the Magician). Children and adults alike will find this one of the most fun books they've ever read. I can still remember the delicious chills I felt when reading this book at twelve, and still enjoy reading it today. As usual, Freddy gets into trouble trying to help friends -- Mr. Camphor to get rid of his aunts and an innkeeper whose hotel is haunted.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Very Best Freddy Books, April 13, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Freddy Goes Camping (Hardcover)
Mean people will always be trying to do bad things, but as long as the nice people, like Mr. Camphor, have Freddy on their side, things are bound to turn out right. Mean old Mr. Anderson tries to trick Mr. Camphor out of his nice hotel on the lake, and very nearly gets away with it. Fortunately, our favorite farm animals come to the rescue. My favorite parts were when Freddy was paddling across the lake and back. I also liked when Miss Minerva whacked Mr. Anderson on the head with a frying pan. Ouch!

And it's a good thing that they stopped Mr. Anderson from taking over Mr. Camphor's hotel, because you can guess what his next target was: the Bean farm! If there was any doubt in your mind how bad Mr. Anderson was, just listen to this: he kicks dogs!

Of course we also get treated to Freddy's wisdom: "Like all chipmunks, he spoke jerkily, stamping his feet, flicking his tail, and giving continual little jumps, as if he felt pins being stuck in him. This sort of thing makes chipmunks very difficult to hold an orderly conversation with."

All in all this has got to be near the top of anyone's list when it comes to deciding which Freddy book to read next. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, wow,wow,wow,wow. Need I say more?, October 9, 1998

My first encouner with Freddy the pig left me feeling like I had just found Tut's tomb. His stories are loaded with treasures-wit, well-developed characters, and clear evidence that Brooks understood and RESPECTED children's intellect and character. Two foretrotters Up!!
