5.0 out of 5 stars Freddy and the ghosts, May 11, 2001

This review is from: Freddy Goes Camping (Paperback)
This may well be the best of the Freddy books written by Walter R. Brooks (its only competition is Freddy the Magician). Children and adults alike will find this one of the most fun books they've ever read. I can still remember the delicious chills I felt when reading this book at twelve, and still enjoy reading it today. As usual, Freddy gets into trouble trying to help friends -- Mr. Camphor to get rid of his aunts and an innkeeper whose hotel is haunted.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Very Best Freddy Books, April 13, 2009

This review is from: Freddy Goes Camping (Hardcover)
Mean people will always be trying to do bad things, but as long as the nice people, like Mr. Camphor, have Freddy on their side, things are bound to turn out right. Mean old Mr. Anderson tries to trick Mr. Camphor out of his nice hotel on the lake, and very nearly gets away with it. Fortunately, our favorite farm animals come to the rescue. My favorite parts were when Freddy was paddling across the lake and back. I also liked when Miss Minerva whacked Mr. Anderson on the head with a frying pan. Ouch!

And it's a good thing that they stopped Mr. Anderson from taking over Mr. Camphor's hotel, because you can guess what his next target was: the Bean farm! If there was any doubt in your mind how bad Mr. Anderson was, just listen to this: he kicks dogs!

Of course we also get treated to Freddy's wisdom: "Like all chipmunks, he spoke jerkily, stamping his feet, flicking his tail, and giving continual little jumps, as if he felt pins being stuck in him. This sort of thing makes chipmunks very difficult to hold an orderly conversation with."

All in all this has got to be near the top of anyone's list when it comes to deciding which Freddy book to read next. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, wow,wow,wow,wow. Need I say more?, October 9, 1998

My first encouner with Freddy the pig left me feeling like I had just found Tut's tomb. His stories are loaded with treasures-wit, well-developed characters, and clear evidence that Brooks understood and RESPECTED children's intellect and character. Two foretrotters Up!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone's friend Freddy goes camping and ghost hunting!!, October 19, 1996
By A Customer
Many of us grew up reading the adventures of Freddy the Pig. Freddy was always up to something new.Very few works are ever considered timeless, but Walter R. Brooks created a world which the kid in us always wants to return to. I consider the Bean Farm, the Hundred Acre Wood and the Shire home,if only for the little while I get to visit them through the author's words.
This particular book has Freddy camping out to rid a friend's home of ghosts. As usual in Mr. Brooks' works, things supernatural turn out to be something more down to earth.
Let us hope all these books become available again (especially his finest,'Freddie Goes to the North Pole' and the 'Bean Farm News').
These books should be republished so that a new generation can become friends with the world's best pig!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of a great and timeless series for all ages., November 16, 1996
By A Customer
I read all the Freddy books as a kid, and now, at 56, still enjoy them.
I'm looking for Freddy books to give to my grandchildren who are just about ready to read them, but they are not available.
These are timeless books that offer the reader a civility so often lacking in other books.
They also are loaded with vocabulary-building words; Brooks does not "talk down" to his audience.Freddy Goes Camping is the best of the series, in my opinion.
Please bring this series back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freddy is back and just as ornery, September 27, 2009
This review is from: FREDDY GOES CAMPING (Hardcover)
Probably before you were born, the bookmobile would stop off at our school and I looked forward to reading "Freddy" books. I enjoyed all of his adventures and friends (Jinx had a few adventures of his own). Now those books are collector's items and rarely show up in used bookstores.

As much as I miss the originals, he is back and just as ornery as ever. One Day I hope the earlier one will be republished. In the mean time even thought, these books are geared towards young ones; they still can hold the attention of old codgers. Each Freddy adventure has a moral.

Kurt wise does a good job of illustrating and for those that have never reads Freddy you have a great mystery ahead of you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freddy is superb!, October 15, 2006

Freddy is helping his old friend, Mr. Camphor, with a couple of problems. One of them is his aunts; one is too gloomy and another is just plain mean. In addition, Mr. EHA and the rats are planning to take the old hotel. Can Freddy help? This book is great and uses lots of humor. You must read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for the younger set, February 22, 1997

When I was a kid I think I read every Freddy the Pig book in the library. The series was really great and I thoroughly enjoyed every one of Brooks' books. It is interesting how Brooks characterized the different animals on the Bean farm. Definitely recommend for the younger people in your life
