5.0 out of 5 stars Another dazzling production from Gwen and Freddy!, April 15, 2009
This review is from: Freddy & Gwen Collaborate Again: Freewheeling Twists on Traditional Quilt Designs (Paperback)
Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran have produced another wonderful, inspirational quilt book. Suggestions and possibilities are offered rather than straight, how to instructions. Gwen reminds us of how we can learn so much from looking at older quilts and Freddy serves up her usual saturated color blast. This book is a real feast for the eyes, and the mind as well. It is filled with wonderful photos and personal stories from Gwen and Freddy both. This is a fine companion to their Collaborative Quilts.

This second book may even be better than the first. More creative process quilting by Gwen and more knockout color by Freddy. But now these two are blending, expanding and embellishing their styles more. :) The color plates of the new quilt experiments are pure eye candy. The construction tips in the back of the book are really helpful and well explained.
This time, Gwen and Freddy have enlarged many of the basic process blocks in the workshop and they have incorporated the process technique into medallion quilts. Many, many, ideas about how to take quilting ideas from the 19th century and step them into 21st century colors, fabrics, and designs that IMHO--most of our quilting foremothers would have been delighted to try.
I regularly read and look through this new book as well as Gwen and Freddy's first book. (which I also just bought) for ideas on how to assemble assorted blocks I have lying around.
I also arranged some appliqued blocks in a medallion pattern and tried some different color arrangements on my niece's wedding quilt I would not have tried if I had not studied these books. It has also enouraged me to put up quilts on design walls again to play with the arrangement. :) When I showed the new quilt at a quilt club--someone asked me if my niece was Italian since it has lots of green and red like an Italian flag. She is not--but I have to admit that I put the blocks together on the design board on the evening of Cinco de Mayo after a couple margaritas and it does look a bit like a Mexican flag--except with flowers. :)
Great fun and great quilting. You won't regret purchasing this book!

Freddy & Gwen Collaborate Again: Freewheeling Twists on Traditional Quilt Designs

A colorful, engaging ride...moves one into a new age of color and form. Encourages the quilter to draw upon the old traditional blocks and other major influences such as the rich African-American tradition and the vast, colorful fabrics that abound today. Using old blocks in new ways, dazzling quilts fill the pages. Try 'em...you just might love 'em!

Freddy & Gwen have done it again! I purchased their first book and it was wonderful! This book is as well and has lots of wonderful, colorful, delightful quilts and also a little more instruction on how to make them. Just the basics and you can take off and soar with your own colorful imagination. Even if you don't quilt and love bright vivid colors, this book is a must have for your library. Makes you feel good just looking at all the beautiful pictures.

This is my second book by Freddy and Gwen and I can't get enough of them. It cheers me up just looking at the pages and the designs are easy to follow for an experienced beginning quilter like me. Alot of the designs I sucessfully make into cushion covers and wall hangings by taking just a section of a pattern. As I live in England Freddy and Gwen are not as well known as in the U.S.A. and my quilting teacher introduced them to me by showing me her book that she had brought back from Florida. I have been a fan ever since. If you like colour and want to see creativity at its best buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Freddy & Gwen Collaborate again, June 1, 2009
This review is from: Freddy & Gwen Collaborate Again: Freewheeling Twists on Traditional Quilt Designs (Paperback)
Since I loved Collaborative Quilting, I had to get this 'part two' edition, and I am glad I did. It is a colorful, playful, and modern twist on some very traditional blocks. I find it so inspirational, I go to my stash, pull out some fun fabrics, sew them together and all the while with a smile on my face. I can't wait to finish a quilt.

Freddy & Gwen have another hit! Often, a "follow-on" book to a hit falls short of expectations, but that is NOT true in this case. I have hundreds of quilt books and this will become one of my favorites! My creativity is revved up so I am heading to my sewing atelier and get started! Thanks Gwen & Freddy.

No patterns for quilts, per se. It's my experience that few quilters want to make an exact duplicate of any quilt. What is so fabulous about the book is that you can pick an "ingrediant" for the quilt recipe, learn to make it (flying geese, diamond border, etc.) and then use it in any way you choose. Of course they have included hundreds of suggestions and examples to inspire any level of quilter to design a quilt that will be unique and beautiful. Clearly they had a grand time collaborating on this book. I hope there will be a third.

It was just what I expected. A lot of fun and wild, to some people, ideas.
I have taken a class from Freddy Moran and I can just hear her talking in the book.
I love color and this book has it.

What an inspiring book! While most quilters are fearful of these colors, these pairings, these choices - for these two master quilters, they work. This book is such fun to read, and to refer to over time. I so enjoyed their first collaboration and book that I was eager to see this one - and it does not disappoint! Fun!
