Book Description

9 and up4 and upFreddy Books
Adults, children, and reviewers have embraced the stouthearted Freddy the Pig since he and his Bean Farm chums first appeared in 1927. The Overlook reissues of this classic series-with almost 150,000 hardcover copies sold-have brought these timeless adventures to a whole new generation eager for a good time and a good laugh. As a recent USA Today feature about the Freddy phenomenon noted, the Freddy books brilliantly illustrate the cardinal virtues: "fair play and a good sense of humor."

In Freddy's Cousin Weedly, the irrepressible Freddy's cousin comes to Bean Farm, and what a timid soul he turns out to be. Jinx, the cat, decides to take charge of him, so as to help him get over his shyness and poor Weedly doesn't know what exciting events are about to occur. Does Weedly change? And what happens when Mr. and Mrs. Snedeker come to visit? Do they get what they came for?

About the Author

Walter R. Brooks was born in Rome, New York, on January 9, 1886, and died in Roxbury, New York, on August 17, 1958. Brooks attended the University of Rochester and, after graduation, worked for the American Red Cross and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. He became associate editor of Outlook in 1928 and then a staff writer for several magazines, including The New Yorker. The short stories he wrote during this time were published in The Saturday Evening Post, The Atlantic Monthly, and Esquire. Brooks's short story "Ed Takes the Pledge" was the basis for the 1960s television series Mr. Ed, but his most lasting achievement is the Freddy the Pig series, which began in 1927 with To and Again (Freddy Goes to Florida). He subsequently wrote twenty-five more delightful books starring Freddy, "that charming ingenious pig" (The New York Times).

Ever since third grade I have hunted for and read every Freddy book I could lay hands on, but FREDDY'S COUSIN WEEDLY was always among the missing.
Thanks are due the publisher and Amazon.com making this book available again. I was afraid it was a sort of one-off, or a minor book, but ordered it for Christmas and discovered a lost treasure. All our friends are there; Jinx the Cat, Mrs. Wiggins of the uncommon common sense, patient but indecisive Hank, and, of course, that paragon of poets, detectives, and pigs -- Freddy himself.
The book was obviously written after Brooks had hit his stride with the series, having a timeless quality and the morals clearly but unobtrusively stated. This book would've gotten five stars had I not compared it to FREDDY GOES CAMPING and FREDDY THE MAGICIAN. Compared to any other children's books, it gets the full five stars. Excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars An early classic in the "Freddy" series, April 8, 2009
This review is from: Freddy's Cousin Weedly (Freddy Books) (Hardcover)
"Freddy's Cousin Weedly"
by Walter R. Brooks
(Copyright, 1940)
--------------------------------------------
One of the classics of the Freddy series, about a farm full of talking animals and their adventures in the human world. In this volume, adventure comes to the farm when their farmer, Mr. Bean, takes a vacation and leaves the animals to run the farm. Much to their surprise, Mr. Bean's relatives come unannounced and take over the house, determined to find (and steal!) a family heirloom that they feel belongs to them. Freddy and the animals defeat their foes in a surprising way: through kindness. By being honest and polite, Freddy and his friends shame the rascally Aunt Effie (a marvelous character!) into being honest herself, and we the readers learn a thing or two ourselves. We are also introduced to Freddy's relatives on a nearby farm, including the painfully shy Cousin Weedly, who is brought out of his shell by the other animals, and by the adventures they have. A great entry in this series -- fans of the wise old cow, Mrs. Wiggins, will be pleased by her prominent role in this story. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)
