Book Description

May 1, 2009
Step into the classical world of the most
prominent artist of the Victorian era through this sumptuous volume featuring a selection
of his work.

Painter and sculptor Frederic, Lord Leighton is one of the foremost artists of the Victorian classical school. His masterpieces featuring mythological subjects are thought to be the inspiration behind the nineteenth-century craze for all things Greek. This monograph includes more than one hundred beautiful reproductions of Leighton's work along with an exploration of the role that classicism played in his paintings. In addition to his art, the book examines the architectural wonders of Leighton House, the artist's opulent Victorian residence in London.

2.0 out of 5 stars The printing colors were inaccurate, I almost sent it back, March 9, 2010

Do not advise for the true Art Lover, especially if you know the palette of colors it was painted in. Flaming June has a creme color sky, not blue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, beautifully illustrated., May 19, 2011

This review is from: Frederic, Lord Leighton: A Princely Painter of the Victorian Age (Hardcover)
This book is actually a catalog, is was released for the re opening of Leighton's house museum. It has alot of information on his life, his education, painting philosophy and inspiration. The photos of the restored house are amazing are beautiful. About the cover piece, well I can talk about that, I am a docent guide in The Museo de Arte De Ponce, Flaming June's home since 1962. The other reviewer is correct, the cover picture looks strange, not only is the sky not blue(actually is like a light lilac beige hue)but the orange of the dress is wrong, the color in the actual painting is far richer, it has many, many variations and tones, is that precisely what makes it so special. The should have used a better more detailed image.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fantastic collection of leighton works, August 25, 2010
This review is from: Frederic, Lord Leighton: A Princely Painter of the Victorian Age (Hardcover)
I found this book to be a fantastic collection of Leighton's work to date. I refer to the book often for inspiration as the color plates are numerous and well detailed. The price is also fantastic as I would expect to pay closer to $50 for such a book. The book also contains a lot of highly detailed drawings that are superb!
