I bought this disc confident that it would be very good, as I like this song repertoire very much and admire the artistry of US mezzo Frederica von Stade. To my surprise, the recital struck me as a curious failure. Von Stade is a subtle artist, who uses inflections to convey expression, and a technically assured one. While her singing on "Voyage a Paris" is firm technically, the expressivity has evaporated and von Stade sings with flat monotony at times and a lack of sparkle throughout. This is at odds with her other recordings. Nor can it be explained by her age: in 1993, when this disc was made over a two-day period in New York, she was at the peak of her career. I have maybe two thirds of this recital on other recordings, and von Stade is at every point inferior to most of them. The collection isn't helped by the bizarre order. The disc starts off with Francis Poulenc's last song collection, "La courte paille" (1960), then doubles back to Eric Satie's 3 1916 songs, then back further to one of Claude Debussy's brilliant early works, "Ariettes oubliees" from the 1880s. An interesting Artur Honegger cycle is followed by one of the least successful interpretations on the disc, Maurice Ravel's 1905 folk song arrangement, "Five Greek Songs", then doubles back to Debussy's great Fetes galantes, then on to Olivier Messiaen and back to a group of Poulenc songs from the 1940s, including the title track, "Voyage a Paris." Yeah, I'm confused, too. This disc just has something wrong with it.

On the plus side, von Stade is accompanied just superbly by her long-time musical partner, Martin Katz, who plays expressively and with coherence. Sound engineering is OK. I'm sorry and surprised I can't provide a positive review. I recommend as an alternative several superb CDs by Dawn Upshaw as well as the very good "Nuits d'etoiles" by French soprano Veronica Gens, both of which represent outstanding examples of French song performance.
