Uniquely Moody, Chilling and Absorbing, September 3, 2002
This review is from: Dead Fred's Haunting Music (Audio CD)
I've collected over a dozen different Halloween CD's over the years, and they seem to fall into two categories: cheap sound effects, or cover song collections. This CD is neither. It has a goth-styled sound track with some pretty creative use of sound effects layered on top. It reminds me of Midnight Syndicate, one of the few other CD's in my collection that I can play all Halloween season. What I like about Dead Fred's CD is that the sound effects are more prominent, especially in the last 5 songs, which by themselves make a chilling musical backdrop to Halloween trick-or-treating.
Each song has a definite mood, bringing to mind different creepy places using strong rhythms. Songs like Midnight and Monster Creation have a strange upbeat quality. Overall the combination of effects and orchestrations works very well in creating a much better scare than the cheesy sound effects CDs (hey, don't get me wrong-I love my B-rated cheapies, Halloween wouldn't be the same without them:).
The one thing I don't get about this CD is the first song. Although its a very listenable rocker with a Alice Cooper meets the Monster Mash flavor, it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the album, which is all instrumental and is darker and moodier.
If you're looking for a unique CD to add to your Halloween collection, I'd highly recommend this one. Not only can you play it on Halloween, but its great for background music at Halloween parties, and a good choice to just get you into a darker mood.
