I loved this book!!!,

This review is from: Free the Animals : The Story of the Animal Liberation Front (Paperback)
Anyone who loves animals MUST read this book and those who aren't fond of animals...this book will change your way of thinking. Each rescue the liberators performed made me hold my breath in anticipation. I cried one minute and the next minute I cheered for every liberation. I read this book in only two days...unable to put it down. I have always loved animals, but this book will make you realize that animals aren't just cute and fluffy, but they are individuals who equally deserve a chance at survival. They feel pain, sadness and happiness just as any human does. I would recommend this book to anyone who is eager to learn more about animal rights!

Stop Ignoring the Brutal Truth ...,

This review is from: Free the Animals : The Story of the Animal Liberation Front (Paperback)
This type of literature makes most people uncomfortable. As you sit reading on your leather couch with a mouthful of dead animal flesh it is hard to not feel some remorse. What the people of this world do in the name of gourmet dining and fashion is revolting. What they do in the name of science is nothing less then sadistic and barbaric. Would the people that call ALF "criminals" say the same thing about the people who broke the law in the old south to help slaves escape? This book may not contain the most concise writing on the subject - (Try Peter Singer's "Animal Liberation") - but it does bring to light some important information about a group of modern day heroes and the cause they support. To the people who posted reviews of this book that made fun of the cause itself or whined about saving lives I dare them to post their email address next time they want to show the world what total morons they really are.

This book is the most exciting animal rights book ever! Most books are just facts and information, this is a true story of the most wonderful people ever created! They show what lengths one should go to for something they believe in! If you are interested in animals or just a good read, read this book! I could read it over and over and still be surprized and dazzled!

Life Changing,

Besides Animal Liberation by Peter Singer, this is by far the best "Animal Rights" book I have ever read. While I may not agree 100% with what the ALF does, I do agree that animals are not ours to experiment on. If you're new to the Animal Rights movement, this book will shock you. It's appalling to read what is done to these poor, helpless animals. The book is about "Valerie" and how the ALF started in North America. Reading the stories will probably make you cry.. but then you'll cheer!!! At the end of the book, "Valerie" makes a plea to all readers to do something. Whether it be volunteering your time at the shelter, adopting a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, boycotting companies who test on animals and so forth. Just do something.

Incredible True Story,

I can't even begin to explain how much i was moved by this true story of an animal rights activist and her devotion to the rescue of tortured animals. Written by Ingrid Newkirk, the President of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), this book is the best account of the trials and tribulations of the Animal Liberation Front to date. For those of you who don't know, the Animal Liberation Front is a group of animal rights activists who believe in direct action as opposed to protests and other grassroots activities. They are also second after the KKK on the governments list of domestic terrorists. Terrorists? Definitely not, as in their history they have never hurt one person. This in stark contrast to the people they're up against, who torture and kill hundreds of thousands of animals every year. I guarantee those of you who claim to be animal lovers will get your money's worth with this one. Great book.

I couldn't put it down!,

This book is a tool for myth shattering. When I first started reading it, I was gripped with suspense, especially because it's fact, not fiction. The real reasons behind the ALF are outlined in this book.. and the fact that the ALF does not condone violence, but liberation of non-human animals. People may label the ALF as "terrorists", but the real terrorists are outlined in this book: vivisectionists breaking every law ever written on humane treatment, factory farms and their intense suffering (and more law breaking inhumanities), even government experiments and the conflict of interest surrounding them. A definite must-read!!

An Easy & Enjoyable Read, But Not Much Substance,

As an animal rights advocate, I have mixed feelings about both ALF and PETA. While I understand why some people resort to direct action, I'm unsure as to whether it actually hurts the movement in the long run. Having said that, I found this book to be inspirational, but overall rather bland. "Free the Animals" reads like a novel, but one aimed at adolescents. It's a bit long, but goes quickly, as its writing style is rather juvenile. The story is a moving one, but ultimately I didn't really gain anything by reading it; it's comprised mostly of anectdotes rather than providing a comprehensive overview of animal experimentation (to be fair, it doesn't claim to do so). It was hardly impartial, especially in regards to PETA, as it was written by Ingrid Newkirk (PETA's role in some of the incidents seemed to be over-exaggerated to me). This book, in my opinion, would make an appropriate gift for a high-schooler who's interested in animals but hasn't yet adopted a humane (read: vegetarian or vegan) lifestyle. I would describe the book's reading level as young adult, and it should be enough to inspire an AR ethic in any concerned animal lover (another good book for this purpose would be "Slaughterhouse" by Gail Eisnitz). However, don't buy this book if you're looking for anything more.

Wow. This book is both disturbing and heartwarming...disturbing in the sense that these cruel experiments are still taking place, and heartwarming in the sense that the ALF is doing something about it. If only everyone could read this book...

This is a very touching book that is written like a suspense novel. The courage of one woman to start the ALF is explored. Each chapter tells a separate story of brave animal rescues. I cried, I cheered, I couldn't put it down

I came to this book not knowing whether or not I supported the actions of the ALF. I'm an animal activist, but I wasn't sure if I would go so far as to support property destruction in name of a political cause. So I read it.
Besides entertaining (the stories of animal rescue are very suspenseful), this book really shined a light on the ALF for me. I've heard of the philosophy and so on, but this provided an actual account, though perhaps second-hand (necessarily), of how and why the ALF in the US was started. By the end, liking the book for me wasn't a matter of whether I agreed or not with taking beagles out of labs. It's a great book, it has great stories and very interesting and compelling philosophy. No matter what side you sit on, at some point you'll be rooting for the "underdog" while reading this book. And for all you know, you may wind up supporting every action described. |
