Review

Now we're freekin' talking!! The longawaited debut from the multi-talented Josh Fix is finally here and what more can I say than that it is a monster CD!!! Imagine yourself a mix between Queen, Jellyfish, Bleu, The Grays, ELO, Mika, Melêe, Rooney and Gavin DeGraw and we're quite near the carpark of Josh music. Phew. Heureka. The sound is freekin' awesome. He produced it himself with help on the mix from the mighty Paul Ebersold. Just listen to Whiskey & Speed!! God damn!! There we can talk about arrangements... And harmonies!! Pure pure heaven. All songs are mighty fine moments - none mentioned - non forgotten... Ahh.. I need to mention Bad With The Superbad; with plink plink piano all freekin' over as well - and listen to the choirs and arrangements on that tune!! Nah - enuff said folks. Instead of sitting hear and write superlatives I demand everyone and surf and buy yourself a copy at this freekin' moment! Josh Fix for president. Easily a contender for the best album in 2008. --melodic.net

Product Description

Josh Fix s Free at Last (1650 Entertainment) thrums with the natural, fated energy of one guy doing what he was born to do. Each of the dozen broad, vibrant songs is exquisitely and painstakingly crafted, achieving a flawlessness that isn t forced. Free At Last isn t a self-indulgent exercise in writing saccharin, bouncy pop songs that revel in naive understandings of life s journey. In fact, Fix infuses his Queen, Ben Folds and Elton John-esque melodies with bitingly intelligent lyrics that characterize a man whose life has been no stranger to tragedy, struggle and the occasional oil rig. Ambitious and sprawling, the record is rooted in manic, bouncy piano rock compositions that conjure a polygamous union between ELO, Queen and Todd Rundgren. Fix again writes in the first person, lamenting a mundane 9-to-5 job hindering your life s purpose (Don t Call Me in the Morning) to recovering from a broken heart (Free At Last). He also creates compelling characters like Jethro (a singer whose voice both exposes and heals all wounds). Fix himself is responsible for the record s tastefully expansive production. Jaime Durr (Hyde Street Studio C) engineered, Paul Ebersold (Spacehog) mixed, and the incomparable Greg Calbi (John Lennon, Bob Dylan) mastered. And the label releasing the album, 1650 Entertainment, is owned by the children of legendary songwriter / producer / label chief Bert Berns. Cassandra and Brett Berns, floored by Fix s talent as a self-contained artist, carry forward their father s independent vision by bringing it from the same 1650 Broadway offices from which their dad first brought up Neil Diamond and Van Morrison. Free At Last is a startling statement from a charmingly reluctant and self-deprecating artist. Even calling yourself an artist is a little frou-frou sometimes, I think. It s like, please you play four chords on a guitar. You re not saving the world. Though he s not saving the world, he is saving audiences from more prosaic pop tunes and another egomaniac rock star...and he s saving himself from another desk job. Josh Fix might not be ready to call himself an artist, but he is Free At Last to let everyone hear his art.

I was working on my 2008 top ten lists to share with friends, and I found myself stumped as to any cd that blew me away all year. Then I saw this CD mentioned by Bruce of "Not Lame" records as a must have. This went straight to #1 on my list-- the other reviewers have it right-- Queen, Jellyfish, ELO, Todd, and maybe a dash of 70's Elton, Billy Joel and Supertramp thrown in-- but those are just reference points. Josh Fix sounds fresh and alive in in 2008! If any of the aforementioned artists put out this record last year, it would be a truly remarkable achievement. This guy is a genius.

I saw Josh Fix open for ABC at the Independent in San Francisco, and despite only seeing about 5 songs, I was hooked. Bought the cd (for a TENNER!), and have been playing it ever since. You will LOVE this cd. I can't wait to see him again! It is EVERYTHING everybody says - GREAT!

Finally, the full length debut from the uber-talented Josh Fix. I've been waiting for this release since I first heard his incredibly well done EP, "Steinway the Hard Way".

This new album was streamed on his website for some time and I would regularly go back to the site to listen to these amazing songs. I am so glad to finally have copies of them for my own collection! All songs on this album are great - but in particular don't miss the incredible tracks "Don't Call Me In the Morning", "Free At Last", "The Water in My Brain", "Jethro" and my long time favorite "Burn It Down". Every song on this album will stand the test of time and will stick with you... don't be surprised if you can't get these tracks out of your head!

Do yourself a favor and buy yourself a copy of Josh Fix's major label debut, Free At Last. You won't be disappointed.
