5.0 out of 5 stars Free to be...still fills me with happiness,and I'm 30!!, October 19, 1999
By A Customer
I first heard of FTBY&M in 5th grade(1979) the whole school watched it in assembly. I loved it-all the stories and most of all the music. It touched me like nothing I had seen or heard before. The title song had our whole school singing for days! Years later i just happened to come across the book in our library, and WOW! all those memories came rushing back!! THEN, two years ago, i was given the soundtrack to FTBY&M, and I have not stopped singing since. The music and stories got me thru a serious illness and a horrible breakup= and when I one day have kids of my own, I will pass the legacy on!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this one for you and your children, August 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Free to Be You and Me and Free to Be a Family (Paperback)
I grew up in the late '70s playing the record of "Free to Be you and Me" over and over. My mom actually had to buy me a second copy because I lost the song book and couldn't live without it. I still sing "When We Grow Up" and "It's Allright To Cry" in the shower and to my nephews. Now I share the wisdom of Atalanta and William's Doll with the teenage mothers I teach. While it doesn't take a genius to figure out the songs on the record were recorded in the '70s, they are timeless treasures for all of our children. Buy this book and the CD for the important children in your life. You'll never be sorry!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Free to Be You and Me and Free to Be a Family (Paperback)
This book brings back fond memories of when I first heard these songs/stories back in grade school. I really think they are wonderful, motivating stories and songs that truly inspire children. I had to get it for my first baby so he can also experience the magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is the way the world should be., May 14, 1999

This review is from: Free to Be You and Me and Free to Be a Family (Paperback)
I loved this song book and the CD - a record when I was growing up- so much. Now when my friends started having children I knew that I had to give their children the same experience but I couldn't find it anywhere until I found amazon.com! I think it made me realize as a little girl that I could be anything I wanted to be. Now I am a lawyer and happily married and continue to feel free to be me!

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Classic!!!, May 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Free to Be You and Me and Free to Be a Family (Paperback)
The book Free to be You and Me will always remain a true classic. I grew up reading the book and listening to the record in the early 80's and I still keep a copy of the book on my shelf. While so many other children's books fail to provide the universal truths about life and what it means to be human, it is nice to know Free to be You and Me still does the job. I learned that "it is alright to cry" and one should never be ashamed to be who they really are. The book helped me to be who I am and make me feel comfortable with myself today. This book is a must (although I could live without "Free to be a family"). Whether you are a child or an adult, do not deny yourself the opportunity to learn about all the great facts of life contained in this spectacular book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully put together- I grew up with it 25 years ago!!!, March 13, 1999
By A Customer
Free To Be...You and Me and Free To Be...A Family is a wonderful book (and CD-it's the best- great stars- Alan Alda, Rosie Greer, Marlo Thomas, Carol Channing and many others!) of stories and songs desinged to encourage growth, self-esteem and vision in children- boys & girls. It's great for helping get past stereotypes for those of us who want open minded children. Before it was "fashionable" to be open-minded and non-prejudiced, my mom bought the original record (25 years ago!). I have 3 sisters & we loved growing up listening to it. This book has all the originals as well as new stories and they are just as inspiring! I've bought one for two of my sisters to use in bringing up their 1 year olds! Enjoy! S. Correia

5.0 out of 5 stars "FREE TO BE" FILLS ME WITH GLEE!, March 25, 1998
When my mother bought me FREE TO BE YOU AND ME almost 25 years ago, I fell in love with it. I can still recite many of the poems and stories by heart. The messages are timeless. Originally published during a time when the women's movement was strong and sensitive men were becoming en vogue, this book encouraged us to be "free to be you and me." It reminds us that no matter what our gender is, we can pursue any career path ("Boy meets Girl"), play with dolls ("William's Doll") or cry aloud ("It's Alright to Cry"). In a world plagued with violence and insensitivities, it is refreshing to read a book that encourages family values and honest pleasures. It is far more stimulating than any video game or television show because it encourages children to use their imagination. I highly recommend this uplifting, sing-song, esteem-building, book. It features poems and stories by renowned artists such as Carly Simon, Judy Blume, and Shel Silverstein. Their messages touch our hearts in a very human way, getting to the core of who are and who we choose to be. For adults, the effect is reassuring; for children, it's magical!
