Review

Miley Cyrus
"Free to be…you and me. Each and every one of us has our own special song to sing. As a musician, I get to hear this all the time—amazing voices, high and low, sweet and funky, all coming together like some great big choir. This book is just like that. Look at all the wonderful art. Read the funny poems and awesome stories. Each page is ONE IN A MILLION, and they all shout out with the same, unstoppable message: that YOU are the star of your own concert. Just like you—and just like this book—I know I’ll continue to grow and change over the years into new versions of me. We’re all free to be…you and me. And that’s THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS."

School Library Journal, October 20, 2008
“This upbeat volume’s message remains valid, and it will be enthusiastically greeted by fans of the original (many of whom are now parents themselves) and those interested in anthologies about empowerment.”

"Free to Be… You and Me was so special to us when were children, and now, we can’t tell you how excited we are to be turning the pages of the 35th Anniversary edition. …This book, which comes with a CD, is one for your whole family to treasure.”

Curled Up With a Good Kid’s Book (www.curledupkids.com)
" Each page features a feast for the eyes in the form of sweet and funny drawings, and a positive message to children about the virtues of equality, kindness and self-determination. For those who grew up with Marlo Thomas’s show, this book will provide many hours of nostalgic musing, and the opportunity to expose their children to the same inspirational message about embracing individuality... There are wonderful messages here for young children trying to determine who they are in the world."

3.0 out of 5 stars Be Aware of What's Not on the CD, November 29, 2008
I purchased Free to Be You and Me for my grandchildren for Christmas. The new edition of the book looks very good. In the write-up it indicated that there was a CD included. I, of course, thought that it was the CD with all the songs that are in the book. It was one of the reasons that I was buying it. That was a wrong assumption.

The CD that comes with the book has only four songs and I was very disappointed when it arrived. I had to find and buy the CD with all of the songs. I wrote to Amazon and told them that I thought that this was deceptive in the description and asked that they let buyers know that the CD that is included is not the original soundtrack. Just be aware that you will need to buy another CD if you want all of the songs that go with the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, February 4, 1999
By A Customer
I'm 15 years old and I was born in '83. I grew up reading and listening to "Free to be You and Me." It's the greatest. It teaches children not to get locked into gender goals. Boys can cry. Girls can play with trucks. Your can teach your child to be free, like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for children everywhere!, March 4, 2000
By A Customer
I think about this collection of stories a lot, especially in reading other stories for children. One of the most beautiful stories I've read is in this book. It's called "Atalanta". In this rare gem of a fairy tale, the "happy ever after" for the princess comes not in marrying the prince, but in following her dreams. Lessons such as staying true to yourself abound in this book, and I truly feel young women such as my sister and I are stronger for having read it at such a young age.
