5.0 out of 5 stars finally, some movement forward, July 17, 2001

This review is from: Free Bop Movement (Audio CD)
Although, the title, FREE Bop is a bit overstated, this is an enjoyable work from beginning to end. As a pro jazzman, it works for me both as a musician and a listener.

The usage of the electric Bass is not only appropriate for this, but it adds a vibe to all that with the use of an acoustic would have left it all flat. The tunes are conceptually new and yet palatible for any ear. the harmonies generated by an underlying close horn section provide the interesting and original feel to this. His horn work is adequate , but best of all, it is not pretentious and the relaxed phrasings and long legato lines suggest more of the freeness intended. This is not an earth breaking new concept album, it is just good new authenticate jazz with an edge and comfortability, with excellent arranging and emotional presentation. Although the Gil Scott-Heron poetry thing seemed annoying at first listen, but I like it now, for placement and content. Horn playing and some meter will bring to mind Lee Morgan. Buy this cd, enjoy it as a listener, and as a musician, take a lesson from Jafar, simplicity and straight forwardness is the place to come from, if you are searching for originallity and moving post-mod bop, anywhere.

I bought the CD at the release party and I have played it everyday since. I love the music even though I am not a big Jazz fan. Jafar brings Jazz to life. His music is upbeat and full of style. I would advise all music lovers to BUY this CD, it brings a new outlook on Jazz to me. I will be looking forward to next CD released by Jafar.
