SK Rocks On, November 13, 2010
This review is from: Free Time (English Version) (Audio CD)
FREE TIME is, in this fan's opinion, even better than Shonen Knife's previous album,
SUPER GROUP. It's the second and last album to feature the fine lineup of Naoko,
Ritsuko and Etsuko. Etsuko, as most fans know by now, left SK shortly after FREE TIME's
Japan release. Her replacement, Emi, is said to be a fine drummer who fits in well.
FREE TIME will remind long-time SK fans of their earlier releases. Naoko has always been
adept at writing songs in several different styles, and offers a good mix here. I've
always loved Naoko's hard rock songs, represented here by PERFECT FREEDOM, ECONOMIC
CRISIS (my fave track) and MONSTER JELLYFISH. We also get 1960s garage in DO YOU
HAPPEN TO KNOW, classic SK pop in CAPYBARA, post-psychedelia in STAR, and even old
time folk music in P.Y.O., a food song that will have you singing, "e-i e-i o".
The bonus CAPYBARA version sounds like a cross between Shonen Knife and Devo. FREE
TIME offers a consistently fun batch of songs that should certainly please SK fans.
Good Charamel Records has done a great service to fans of Shonen Knife and J-Rock in
general. They deserve our support.
