Talented singer songwriter meets band and loses identity,

This review is from: Free the Ethan Daniel Davidson Five (Audio CD)
I listen to Ethan Daniel Davidson because the guy can write. His lyrics combined with those simple yet pleasing sounds on Alaska 11 North and Ring Them Bells were what made this artist one of my favorites. Look, he is a folk singer. He isn't punk rock like Green Day. He isn't southern rock. He isn't honky tonk. He isn't Nat King Cole. He's a poor impression of any of those. He's great at writing and great at his own style. I'll be disappointed if I find out that he left all of that genius for this. Free the Five sounds like every other band you've ever heard. The lyrics are toned down and I don't sense that as much effort went into them. The band is just okay. In fact, they probably do more harm than good. There doesn't seem to be much room for invention, which seems strange, because this album seems to be all about "trying something new". The new thing doesn't work at all. He's not that good at it.
Do you know how I found out about Ethan Daniel Davidson? I listened to the first song of every interesting looking cd at a local used book store using my own cd player. I found Big Harp's White Hat that way. I found Alaska 11 North that way and became of a fan of this artist. I did enjoy the hunt, but I like finding diamonds in the coal as well. I would have thrown this one back in the first 15 seconds of listening to the first song. I probably wouldn't even have skipped through to hear the other songs. This one is just a lump of fools gold. Go back to Alaska 11 North and Ring Them Bells for the real gold.

this is a great lp. loved the more rock-type feel. as always, the lyrics cross time and generation.
