5.0 out of 5 stars Best machine quilting book out there, July 2, 2006
By
This review is from: Free Expression: The Art and Confessions of a Contemporary Quilter (Paperback)
The best compliment I can give this book is that it is never on my bookshelf - it's always right next to my sewing machine! Robbi Joy Eklow has the best instructions for fabric dyeing (and I've read quite a few books on dyeing) and the best information on free-motion machine quilting. Since purchase, I have consulted it over and over. Highly recommended!

My eyes practically popped out of my head when I saw the amazing colors and techniques that Robbi Joy Eklow uses to make her quilts, and I couldn't wait to try them out myself. I found the directions easy to follow and the patterns and CD included really made this book a good value. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in new ways of designing and stitching quilts.

5.0 out of 5 stars It has it all!, December 11, 2005
This review is from: Free Expression: The Art and Confessions of a Contemporary Quilter (Paperback)
Free Expression has information on design, color, construction, fusing, quilting, and dyeing your own fabric. Patterns are included in the book and sizeable on CD. The designs are wonderful, photographed artfully, you can really see the quilting in the photos! You feel like Robbi is talking to you when you read this book! There is no book out there even similar, it has every step illustrated and photographed. What a well written book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright,Gorgeous,Fun and Fast, March 28, 2006
This review is from: Free Expression: The Art and Confessions of a Contemporary Quilter (Paperback)
What a fabulous book! R J E's style is unique, but the techniques are well explained and demonstrated in such a way that I can see how I can incorporate this work into my own style. There is a delectable sense of fun throughout the book, both in the quilts themselves and the way in which the book is written. The book is a great read as well as being full of fabulous new techniques and inspiration.

This book is a great book for quilters. I am not a quilter. However, it's also a great book for quilters' sons and other relatives. I swear. I'm not just saying that because my mother told me to. I'm saying it mostly because she won't take the lock off of the refrigerator until I write this review.

The pictures in this book are really visually interesting. There are lots of pictures of quilts with tea cups, and containers that probably had tasty food in them. There were some juicy looking oranges in some of the quilts too.

This book is really well laid out and interesting to read, for experienced quilters and new quilters alike. The title is a little misleading, however. There aren't that many confessions in this book. For example, my mom didn't confess to using starvation as a means of coercion in the book. I think I'll include that part in the book I'm currently working on:

I'm Hungry: The Art and Confessions of a Contemporary Quilter's Son.

5.0 out of 5 stars ok, so I wrote it., August 8, 2005

Of course I like it. I wrote it. I can't understand why some sellers are selling it for more than list price. It's not rare.

I'm very proud of the book, if you like my style of quilts, you will like the book.

As a traditional quilter it was my desire that this book would help me step out of my "box" and try some new tecqniques while creating some one-of-a-kind contemporary quilts. Well, it has done that and more. Robbi Joy Eklow has a wonderful way with words and her teaching style is both whimsical and entertaining. One never knows what a book will teach them, especially when stepping out of their own comfort zone; however, I can say that this one is a real winner and I am so thankful this author has shared her knowledge through words and works for others to learn and enjoy. I would definitely purchase this book again -for myself or as a gift for a fellow quilter.

This is a realy fun book with a lot of creative ideas. I really enjoyed her sense of humor, philosophy of just letting go of perfectionism, and sense of play of this book. I haven't had time to try out any of the specific ideas or patterns, but I feel inspired! And the tips look really doable - I hope to be able to laugh a bit at myself so that I actually get something done just like the author of this book.
