Book Description

When Matt and Sarah Woodson take a much-needed vacation with their ten-year old son, John, their intention is to find a relaxing, remote spot to take a break from the artificial stimulation of their busy world back in Jacksonville, Florida. What happens within hours of settling in to their rural, rustic little cottage in a far-flung spot on the coast of Ireland is an international incident that leaves the family stranded and dependent on themselves for their survival. Facing starvation, as well as looters and opportunists, they learn the hard way the important things in life. Can a family skilled only in modern day suburbia and corporate workplaces learn to survive when the world is flung back a hundred years? When there is no internet, no telephones, no electricity and no cars? And when every person near them is desperate to survive at any cost?

3.0 out of 5 stars A survival novel that fell a bit flat April 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The book opened strongly with Sarah and Matt arriving in Ireland for what is meant to be a vacation in an idyllic, remote location.Paradise lasts until the next morning when the family finds themselves unexpectedly off the grid -- no power, no cars, and virtually no contact with the outside world.

Slowly, as they make contact with the locals, they learn that the world has been hobbled by an electromagnetic pulse, and they decide to hunker down and make the best of it. Assisted by an elderly couple down the road, they learn self-sufficiency and enter into a local war in order to survive.

The novel opened on an exciting note, but things seemed a bit too easy for the main characters. They made the transition too quickly into homesteaders, even hitting the target during rifle practice on the very first time. And Sarah quickly embraces the role of vigilante too easily. Granted, during times of crisis, one's strengths come to the surface, but I felt the story did not ring true.

The story itself is intriguing, and perhaps would have benefited from switching perspectives.. perhaps the elderly couple's viewpoint would have added a different voice to the narrative in the roles of mentors, rather than focusing solely on Sarah.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inner strength March 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fear of Fallingrevolves around a woman's ability to overcome paralyzing anxiety and do what she must for her family. As the family works together to survive after a global electrical outage, Sara comes to discover her inner core of steel where it comes to providing for and protecting her family.

An enjoyable read but be prepared to suspend disbelief on a couple plot points. Well-edited and no formatting problems. 3.5 stars

2.0 out of 5 stars A Dissenting Point of View February 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well written but poorly plotted story that had me pulling my hair out in frustration as I read along. Now, the author is a skilled writer and I enjoyed the mental images of fog and bog and green fields of Ireland, but I have never been a fan of books where the protagonist does something really dumb and is rewarded for it in the end. I counted no less than three instances where our heroine should have been dead in a ditch BUT FOR the intervention of good luck. Plotting a story where fair fortune is the method of extracting your protagonist from disaster strikes me the wrong way, but to each their own. I read all the reviews written and they sure sucked me in thinking this book was the next best thing to "Alas, Babylon". Sorry, not even close. This family continues tripping through the whole book with the survival sense of a mouse hanging out at a cat convention.

I know I am going to be in the minority here but I really had to force myself to finish this book, muttering under my breath the whole time. I don't think the author meant this intentionally, but after I finally reached the end I kept thinking that one lesson to take away is that if civilization is crashing down around you, take no prisoners. Not sure I agree but the logic works based on the way the story ends up.

Typical of current American writers this novel is about good and evil with religious overtones. For all that, it was well written and I enjoyed the read. Read more
