Book Description

Terrorism, culture wars, climate-change denial, religiously fueled wars – together, they pose an existential threat to civilization, and all spring from the same source: Old Time Religion. If civilization is to survive, it's high time for people of good faith to reform the religions of the world. So argues this startling new book from Huffington Post science and religion writer Clay Farris Naff.

Contrary to popular misunderstanding, he writes, the main dividing line today is not between the Judeo-Christian religions of the West and various sects of Islam in the East, but between Mainstream Religion and Old Time Religion all over the world. Regardless of label, he says, people everywhere seek the same things from mainstream religion: a sense of community, moral guidance, and the comforts of ritual and tradition. By contrast, Old Time Religion, in Islam, Christianity, or any faith, is dogmatic, authoritarian, sexually repressive, tribalistic, politically charged, and bent on domination.

Quoting the noted religion scholar Philip Jenkins, Naff writes, “religion has become 'the prime animating and destructive force in human affairs.' Not all religion and not only religion, but surely Old Time Religion. “We are tantalizingly close to achieving the age-old dream of a just and peaceful world. Unfortunately, we are just as close to seeing that dream go over the falls.”

Old Time Religion is driving young people away from mainstream religion in droves, and at the same time driving civilization to the brink of disaster, Naff argues. To counter this perilous trend and allow global civilization to make a “safe landing,” he offers a new paradigm for reform. Free Faith, he says, is not a religion but a set of rational, science-compatible principles that can empower people to make positive change in whatever tradition they happen to find themselves. “Free God Now is an appeal,” he writes, “It is a plea to you to look into your heart and free God from the prison of ancient theology.”

If mainstream religion can be reformed, revitalized, and clearly differentiated from Old Time Religion, Naff argues, then people of good faith can make alliances across a wide spectrum, from atheist to liberal believer to traditionalist, united in opposition to the unhinged, violent, reactionary right so prominent in religion today.

Clay Farris Naff, an award-winning journalist, broadcaster, scholar, and science writer, has lived in and reported from predominately Muslim and Buddhist countries, as well as the Judeo-Christian West. In addition to his Huffington Post essays on science and religion, he has written for Scientific American, Newsweek, the Humanist, Metanexus, and Earth Magazine, among others, and has reported for National Public Radio. He frequently speaks at colleges and churches, and other organizations.

About the Author

Clay Farris Naff (clayfarrisnaff.com) is a science and religion writer who early in life had the unusual privilege of living in predominately Muslim, Christian, and Buddhist countries, as well as having close friends of other religions – all without ever being lodged within one. As a child, he lived in London, Istanbul, and Cairo before his family returned to the United States, eventually to settle in Philadelphia. As a young adult, Naff lived and worked in Japan for more than four years. An award-winning journalist, broadcaster, and author, he has been an Associate Press reporter, Tokyo corres-pondent for United Press International, a freelance reporter for National Public Radio, and a freelance writer for Newsweek, Earth Magazine, The Humanist, and Scientific American, among other publications. He has been a science-and-religion columnist for the Metanexus Institute, and is the author or editor of numerous books. Naff lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he serves as the executive director of a charitable organization, writes, and guest lectures at various colleges, universities, and churches. 5.0 out of 5 stars O-M-G-W-O-W April 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is absolutely fascinating to read. The author has a great sense of humor and is able to nudge us along and away from what I call blind thinking...at least he wants us to 'think' about it. I must say I was raised a Christian but find that I want more ways to think about my feelings and I have lots of questions. This book is brilliant, yet, in my opinion, not 'pushy'. I am interested in the idea of the acceptance of all religions and a person's right to his or her own...all the while not forcing it on others, or hurting others. "Free God Now" and the idea of opening up our minds is short, fun to read, and definitely thought-provoking. I experienced lots of 'laugh-out-loud' moments! I have already recommended it to many of my friends of all faiths. I only hope he writes more and it sounds like this is Volume One. So, I have high hopes it's soon because I am getting "up there" senior citizen-wise! One more comment: I would like this book in paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars Religion Transformed for the Better April 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a unique book. It maintains a strict respect for science and invokes it without attacking those with religious beliefs. It is obviously an intensely personal work, yet it maintains intellectual integrity on a level with Pigliucci and Dennett. I have trouble tolerating a majority of the religious ideas in the world, but Naff builds a plausible image of a system that just might have the ability to put societies on a sustainable path that averts the current trend toward escalating conflict and destruction. That is an idea upon which I had given up, so for me personally, this is a wonderfully fresh and optimistic book. I recommend it for anyone who needs a rational religious world view that is consistent with science.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mankind's Mission April 22, 2012
By Jim B
Format:Kindle Edition
What do we need in order to achieve a "peaceful, rational and sustainable civilization," asks Clay Naff (who has written for Scientific American, Newsweek and other media). How can we head off a "Jesus versus Mohammad death-cage match"? How can we tame anti-science theocrats on our national stage? Can humanity find a Mission to inspire us in the face of these and other threats?
Clay Naff is at home in the interface of Science and Religion, a topic on which he writes for the Huffington Post. His international background, his brushes with deadly terrorism and his awareness of the dangers of fatally irrational politics give energy to this exploration of a wide range of fascinating topics. He thread his way through multiple universes, faith healing, Pascal's Wager, consciousness, Intelligent Design, quantum indeterminacy, and many more subjects with the clarity and humor that make it an easy and enjoyable read. Not wanting to spoil it, I'll just say he does finds an inspiring Mission for humanity that involves first freeing faith from deadly Old Time Religion, and then reconciling reason and purpose with compassion and tolerance. A tall order, and an effort worth reading and pondering.
