5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant insight into the beliefs of present day Sinn Fein
This book was given to me by a friend from Belfast after my constant questions about "The Cause." It is a straight forward and brilliant insight into the reasons for the republincan stuggle and proposes Sinn Fein's ideas on how to resolve it. Not only is "Free Ireland" an excellent place to start an understanding of the Republican Movement, it also...

1.0 out of 5 stars Only for the ignorant
Riddled with informers, running scared from Billy Wright and Johhny Adair's UVF and UFF units, militarily defeated by the British and under 24-7 observation and surveillance, the IRA threw the towel in and surrendered. Now that they have been beaten, it is important for their politicians to pretend otherwise. Only those so clueless that they barely know where Ulster is...

This book was given to me by a friend from Belfast after my constant questions about "The Cause." It is a straight forward and brilliant insight into the reasons for the republincan stuggle and proposes Sinn Fein's ideas on how to resolve it. Not only is "Free Ireland" an excellent place to start an understanding of the Republican Movement, it also works as a reminder to those involved how we got to the passing of the recent peace agreement. Tio cfaide ar la.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book by an Irish patriot and hero., May 20, 2003

An excellent book about how the IRA was able to defeat the British millitarily, and how Sinn Fein was able to defeat the Unionists politically. Adams has long been a hero to the Irish American people, and is well known for his ability to outwit and outmaneuver the forces of Britian and Loyalisim.

5.0 out of 5 stars A United Ireland, February 2, 2012
Gerry Adams very succinctly and clearly gives us his vision for how a United Ireland can be brought about. He details the history of Irish nationalism alongside the attempts by English governments to suppress Irish nationalism. He is very passionate and strong in his belief that we are now at a time in history when we can finally bring about a United and peacful Ireland.

I agree with the reviewer from Boston in all that he says. Read this book to cut through the British propoganda that surrounds us.

An embarrassing book - avoid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gerry Adams' War For the Mind of Irish America., May 3, 2000

Political science professionals who need to acquaint themselves with Gerry Adams' proposals for Ireland should purchase this book, but unfortunately many less prepared Irish Americans are going to be taken in by this revolutionary's tactic of substituting the word socialism whenever he knows they wouldn't otherwise support the Marxist ideology (Communism) he fanatically believes in. Take a close look at his chapter seven, "Republicanism and Socialism," and notice how he wants to be associated with the "socialists" that he thinks have some support, such as South Africa's ANC, but he doesn't want to be associated with the Marxists he knows are now unpopular, such as the Red Brigade or Baader-Meinhoff. Yes, it's true, there have been all types of Marxists, but the difficulty for him is this: Most Irish Americans are not willing to support any kind of Marxism, even though these same Irish Americans are providing the Sinn Fein / IRA with most of its funding. Ireland's nationalist and loyalist communities have suffered too long, especially the children and the elderly, because of such propaganda tricks. Another device Adams employs is this: He writes "Get the British out of Ireland." Again he is ruthlessly lying to his Irish American supporters, never pointing out that Ireland's second largest ethnic group (a group even represented on the Republican Tricolor flag), proudly defines itself as an Irish variant of British. To compare this with reality, when Americans are drawn into assisting the campaign to "Get the British Out," they are actually turned into Don Quixotes, doing no more good than attacking windmills. But this tactic allows the Marxists of Sinn Fein to collect money from Irish Americans, and the support promotes class warfare against the Irish of British descent. That is ironic, because the loyalists actually have the largest working class community in the six counties, and they are Ireland's second largest ethnic group. The class warfare only fuels a cycle of sectarian violence that unifies the Irish and British in tragedy. That does not really bother a hardened revolutionary like Adams, and outside of Ireland his allies target other people of European descent (including Irish Americans) for all the bad luck nonwhites have ever had. You should notice that Irish Americans never knowingly work against their own interests in America, because on their own turf they quickly recognize that Marxists are racist against whites. But Irish Americans rarely stand up so well to the Marxists who visit from the Old Sod to collect money for the very ideology that undermines them. No, those Marxists wear a pretty convincing mask of loyalty to the Irish peoples. And the right accent allows them to convince many Irish Americans that, as natives, they know what's best. Not all Irish Americans can be fooled, though, and America's best negotiators are in Ireland to seize the initiative. Most of the Irish in Ireland do not support Sinn Fein or the IRA, because it's harder to fool the Irish in Ireland. They know it's not in their interests to turn their own country into a racist shooting gallery, and the arrival of the European Economic Community means that Ireland's two great ethnic communities cannot fully participate in the prosperity - resolving issues of social justice within the free enterprise system - until the Marxists give their obsolete game up. This book could an update as well, so that Irish Americans could be informed about what Adams is doing since his ethnic cleansing campaign in Norther Ireland: Now he's welcoming as many non-White immigrants into Ireland as possible.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous Terrorist Propaganda, January 27, 2001
By
Michael O'Connor (Galway, Republic of Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Free Ireland: Towards a Lasting Peace (Paperback)
This book is extremely offensive in that, from the outset it attempts to make legitimate the terrorist campaign of murder led by IRA/Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland. In an ironic political spin, the author (himself a convicted terrorist) attempts to associate himself with peace when he and his organisation are responsible for a vast number of horrific bombings, mass murders etc.

The title itself: "Free Ireland" is most offensive. Adams pictures himself as a liberator, when the opposite is true. 60% of the people in NI want the province to remain part of the UK. To support his argument, the author sights historic incidents of British oppression, but a United Ireland would be greatly oppressive since it would ignore the democratic principle of majority rule.

As you read the most important point to remember is this: Adams clearly wants to emphasis his role (as he sees it) as peacemaker. This is misleading. Sinn Fein/IRA are not responsible for peace, only murder. The credit for the success of the current peace process in NI, should go to those who have appeased these terrorists (i.e. British & Irish governments)...by offering concessions (e.g. seats in devolved NI government), they have slowly weaned SF/IRA from their vices.

Please don't believe that murderers will stop killing because they have developed a conscience. At no time in this book does Adams apologise for the atrocities his organisation has committed (although he spends much effort condemning the actions of others). Adams did not bring about peace, he simply stopped murdering people because he believes that he may further his cause more successfully by talking politics.

At times the carefully manufactured image of peacemaker does slip. How can someone publishing a document containing the line: "Get the British out of Ireland" maintain international respect or domestic credibility? A book of such ethnic hated is extremely offensive to the entire population of G.Britain as well as the Protestants of Northern Ireland.
