Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The ennui of the rich and recherche proves contagious as Trump ( For Love Alone ) unpacks a steamer trunk of scandals already over-familiar to gossip-column readers. Katrinka van Hollen, beauteous Czech Olympic skier and ex-wife of cutthroat billionaire Adam Graham, keeps busy expanding her hotel empire and revelling in her second marriage to media honcho Mark van Hollen. Her happiness galls the dastardly Adam, who plots to bring her crashing to earth. Meanwhile, she jets to social hot-spots, bounds through countless parties with friends whose cash can't buy them decent relationships, defends her sulky, long-lost son Christian (a Eurotrash poster boy) against date-rape allegations, fends off Adam's legal broadsides and commiserates with Mark, whose company is threatened by a takeover attempt only a few weeks after he's targeted by a femme fatale employed by a Mayflower madam to wreck their marriage--and that's just the short list. Trump writes smooth prose and whips up a plot with more kinks than the Kama Sutra, but she substitutes brand names for evocative descriptions, so her glitz never really glitters. Clumsy machinations and a bevy of one-note characters further mar the novel, which will probably reach bestseller lists nonetheless.

From Library Journal

Would-be writers are often advised to write about what they know. Trump--or Trump's ghostwriter--does just that in this new romance novel that closely parallels her flamboyant, much publicized life. In this sequel to For Love Alone (Audio Reviews, LJ 6/1/92), beautiful and successful hotel magnate Katrinka has found wedded bliss with wealthy newspaper owner Mark Von Hollen. However, her first husband, the treacherous and unfaithful international business magnate Adam Graham, is so consumed with jealousy and regret over losing Katrinka that he schemes to destroy his rival's marriage and business. There's plenty of name dropping, and Trump's efforts at serious writing provide some chuckles as she makes sure Adam gets his just desserts in the end. Actress Morgan Fairchild reads adequately. Buy according to demand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh, dear. What more can one say than that?, July 19, 2006
This review is from: Free to Love (Hardcover)
I saw the cover of this book-- a misty photograph of Ivana in a large, bright-pink hat-- and read the back cover, which promised a trashy roman a clef about Life Among The Jet-Setting Famous (with a possible subtitle of The Donald Is Horrible And Underendowed), and promptly filched it from the Free Books shelf of my laundry room.

I wish I hadn't.

The subtitle holds true, but so does every other cliche in existence, and the writer (no, not Ivana, the person who actually wrote the book) clearly felt that writing trash was beneath him/her and coped by taking no joy in the process whatsoever. As Our Heroine (a Czech ex-model recently divorced from an embittered-- and infertile-- business magnate with mommy issues) winds her way through the worlds of the Rich, the Famous, and the Very Very Rich And Extremely Disturbed, she accumulates the usual round-up of supporting characters, including Illegitimate Eurotrash Son Given Up For Adoption At Young Age (evil) and Naive Singing Czech Cousin (not evil), advises friends to have plastic surgery because "it will make you feel better," and copes with The Donald's (who is here "The Adam," although, alas, he is never referred to as such) attempts to destroy her life by expressing absolute faith in her current husband (a cardboard cutout with a tortured past) and wandering around with saintly mien. Producing a book such as this is clearly not a crime, or Jackie Collins would have no career. No, the crime is that the author was having no fun and seems to have felt compelled to pass this feeling of complete and utter disinterest on to the reader. Correct Czech diminuitives are employed, all emotions and actions are spelled out, and the complicated intertwining relationships of the characters are thoroughly explained, even when the character in question will disappear at the end of the sentence.

This book is going straight back into the laundry room. I can't guarantee it won't slip and fall into a washing machine along the way.
